Editiing software

Hi, I've recently got into experimental and short film making. I have a very basic Sony full HD camcorder which satisfies my needs for HD recording. I also use a Sony CCD-TR808e Hi8 camcorder for the experimental pieces. Everything works fine until the editing kicks in. My computer is slow. Way to slow. I have used Vegas HD Platinum 11 before for editing in 480p. That works really fine, but when it comes to 1080p clips, it's f***ing slow. I do have a MacBook Air, and it works fine. The problem is that I can't stand working with MacOS because of the limits of file and folder access and all the "pre-made" software that feels really stiff and childish to use. So what software should I get for my PC? Is there any lighter software out there that handles HD editing better than others. Because Vegas feels way to "heavy" for my simple laptop.

Specs:
2.2 GHz AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor RM-75
4096 MB (2 x 2048 MB)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650

Thanks

*EDIT! Shit spelled "editing" wrong....

Compared to other programs out there I would say that Vegas is much less taxing on a system...

You kind of need to upgrade your computer if you plan on editing 1080p. Needs to be quad core, higher than 3.0 ghz is extremely preferable and 8gb+ ram is better. Then (sticking with PC) you've only got Premiere (my preference) or Vegas to go with
