DOCUMENTARY WORKSHOP
Filmmaking and Social Change: An Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking and Theory
Length: 1 week, 6 taught days
CineSalento and the Salento International Film Festival in association with the LIDF and the Accademia del Cinema e della Televisione a Cinecittà (ACT-Multimedia – Cinecittà Campus), is pleased to offer a Documentary Workshop in Salento this summer, running from Monday September 14 until Sunday September 20, 2009. The workshop will be held at the Hotel Montecallini, a four start hotel situated in Baia di San Gregorio, in Salento, the heel of Italy.
Patrick Hazard (director of the LIDF) leads this course for anyone interested in how documentaries can inspire and effect social change.
Plotting a course through the history of documentary film the workshop will provide participants with the tools to research and make their own film as well as gain a deeper understanding of the ethics, theory and outcomes of documentary film. Moving between theory and practice, and working in small groups, participants will develop a film project to production stage.
The other principal tutor is Peter Fraser, who manages the film events and training company InSight Education. Peter is also the director of Tiresias Media, a production company working with international filmmakers of exceptional vision.

Visual Grammar
Relationship between aesthetics an politics
Narrative structure
Differences between story and plot
Soviet Kinopravda/Italian neo-realism
Third cinema movement
French new wave
Please note that you will not be making a film as part of this course. Follow-up, practical filmmaking courses will be available in the UK.
Course cost: Euro 1250 (£1,080) per person and includes the course and half-board accommodation in the 4 star Hotel Montecallini. The price does not include the airfare, but does include airport pick-up and return from Brindisi airport. Application deadline: 30 August 2009 – Apply Now.
