digital voice recorders

anyone seen these things? they're around 100$ and basically work just like tape recorders except digitally.

I think like, if you wanted to capture sound while shooting from a distance this would a way to do it.

has anyone ever worked with them before? (as an alternative to wireless microphones)

I just can't imagine the quality being very good. Especially for dialogue.

you could buy some clip on mics that would fit into the mic in port of the recorder and have them in peoples clothing.

or generally just buy the 12 dollar hand-mic from staples and go around talking to people with it.

And then there's audio editing.

Among the problems... you can't monitor the audio while the scene is being shot and you won't be able to adjust volume on-the-fly.

Here is a ROUGH CUT scene w/ the dialog captured using the Digital Recorder. Shot on a very loud downtown street, LOTS of traffic. At times buses would be 10 feet away and of course I yelled CUT and waited, but lots of cars close by
