Cross Dissolve Duration Changes

I am sitting here with my FCP manual and I am attempting to change the duration of a Cross Dissolve.

I am following every step, as per the manual, but when the transition is highlighted and I have/see the scroll icon to extend the duration, the display does say: +00.00.01(New Duration = +00.00.01)

but the duration will not change. Is there a hold/default/failsafe that is keeping my transition from changing its duration? I am following the manual to the letter. I do have enough frames on both sides of the transition. I do not need the transition to take that long, just a simple dissolve....

Are you trying to shorten the duration of the cross dissolve? I simply double click the transition to open it in the viewer, then I type the duration I want in the upper left time field. If you want 15 frames, just type ".15", and that will give you a quick transition.

You don't have enough video to extend the duration. You must have 1/2 the duration available following the cut on the first clip and preceding the cut on the 2nd clip.

The clips, 1&2, are long enough. Not only that but the other 2 places that I put this cross dissolve are shorter and the dissolve works there. I am trying to get a 1-3sec. dissolve on clips that are about 20 seconds long. The first two transitions are fine. This third one will not cooperate.

So, the next thing I tried to do was to double-click one of the first two transitions into my viewer, and drag the hand holding the transition so that I would get a 'copy' of the first two transitions. NOPE... :grumpy:

It's not the length of the clip that is in question. It is how close the transition (or cut) is to the end of the clip. For example, if you wanted a 1 second transition, you'd need at least 15 frames before the in-point of the clip coming in, and 15 frames after the out point of the clip going out.

That is the only reason FCP would limit your transition length.

Okay! This is what I was doing:

I knew where I wanted the transition to be, but I was putting my cursor where one clip ended and the other began. When I just put the transition near the clip it worked, but that seems to not be as precise as it could be. Am I right about that?

However, it seems as if, for lack of a better way of saying it, I was putting the transition between the clips and not on the clips. So what was happening was that there was no where for the transition to happen. Does that sound right?

That sounds right. The way that happens, if I understand you correctly, is by having a gap between the two clips. Like a 1-frame gap that you cannot see, but the clips are not together, so there can be no selecting the transition area. That has happened to me.
