Hi, I've been really becoming interested in the field of Film & photography as well as writing and I'm considering going to film school or starting from the bottom of the barrel and working my way up. I was wondering though, how the heck do I get a job as a "runner" or whatever else considered bottom of the industry starting out as a free volounteer to see how things work/function and becoming involved gaining set experience and possibly getting an actual paying job at some point. I dont even know what a runner is or what they do. Could someone maybe help me out with all this? Thanks for taking the time.

The first thing I would do, if I were just starting out again, is pick up a couple of comprehensive books on the filmmaking process that describe what each position on a set is and what they do and who they are responsible to. Know this, understand this. Then you want to find out if theres anything going on in Salem or Eugene, people making films. In Eugene, it couldnt hurt to put an ad up on a bulletin board at the college or something, saying you want to help out on a film set. You never know where a job guarding the craft services or being a PA could lead.

And if there's nobody (which I doubt) in your area doing it already.. After reading the books and whatnot, get a script for a short, get yourself some crew, and cast, and just do it. ;)

Who knows.. maybe your short will be the next Napoleon Dynamite or something.

wow that was the fastest and most numerous reply I ever got to a thread in any forum I've ever been on o_O O_o. Cool I think I like this forum already.- thanks for the suggestions I'll go by the chemeketa library and look around at the film books they got there on film process/ roles. I know they have alot as I've already had a short glimpse of them so that shouldnt be an issue ( I'm broke at the moment.) I will post some bulleteins though, I'm just not sure where to post them other than Chemeketa Community College & the art institute of portland where I attended just last year. I dont know of any film maker groups in town or where they might be most likely to catch a glimpse of my personal ad as a free volounteer : /. Er, brain fart I just thought of the NWFilm center, I've never been there but I suppose I could show up and maybe post a bulletein there too and maybe get info from them too. K well I guess I got my first two steps clarified, thanks for the helpful responses.
