Compressing Files

Compressing Files & Weird Question

I learned something new today. As I'm on climbing onto Day 3 of compressing Sunday's Shoot. Even with Compressor off, batches continue to compress. Is that the norm? Usually if you quit an application its work stops.

Weird Question:

Hypothetical: I have a take that's 1gig. I'm only using 1 second of it. That one second equals 40mb. That's a lot of wasted space on my HD.

Is there a way I can create a new file with just that one second?

The only way I thought of is take each individual cut and create a QT movie. Then repiece it back together again. Of course if there's 40 cuts, that's 40 .movs.

Is there an easier way? If I create a QT mov will I be doing anything to the rate, color, compression, etc?

Right now I've cut 20 scenes, I'm using a firewire Ext HD and it's 250gigs is almost completely taken up. When in reality I'm probably using 30 gigs.
