series Coming soon

Just watched a Coming Soon to HBO Max trailer and actually found myself looking forward to watching some TV.

New season of True Detective, with Jody Foster. This one, I read, is without Nic Pizzolatto, the show runner, executive producer, and sole writer of the previous seasons. It will be interesting to see the difference. When one single mind writes every episode of a series it gives the thing an integrity no writers room, I think, can approach. (Which is maybe why, for me, the first four seasons of West Wing are GOAT territory television--for me, way above, say, Sopranos and Breaking Bad.) Pizzolatto's weird, kind of admirably sophomoric dip into esoteric philosophy, in season one, was something . . . I don't know, something seemingly impossible in television: something unique. Maybe I'll check out seasons 2 and 3 again, which, honestly, I can now barely remember.

Also, new seasons of several other HBO shows that were among my favorite TV things of the last few years: Winning Time, Julia, Perry Mason, Righteous Gemstones, and, I can hardly believe it, Curb your Enthusiasm.
