Can anyone tell me what they think

I just recently made this first installment in a series of videos that i hope to one day compile into a feature length movie. I understand that the editing is not exactly top notch, but at this point i dont have the funds to access high tech software. I am however trying my best, and feel that as i progress i will learn more tricks to help it be a better production overall. But i would like to have the opinion of those who have been through this sort of thing.

Your feedback is much appreciated

More installments will be coming soon.

Ok, I watched it. The first problem I see is that your characters are often looking out of the frame. You need to get an off camera microphone to strengthen your dialog. The script was pretty funny, but a little hard to follow, at times. Watch your 180 degree rule when cutting.

Ok, having said all that, you've posted 4 times on this forum. The first time your post was moved to the classifieds, next you posted a youtube link, then you bumped your original post, and now you posted this, which should also be in the classifieds. Speaking for myself, if you want me to take the time to critique your movies, you have to abide by the rules of the forum, and I'd really like to see you give something back to the forum. Your movies have potential. I'd love to help you out, but hang with us a little and share your experience with other aspiring movie makers.

First, thank you for actually watching and commenting on the video. Most people don't even take the time to watch.

Next, you have a point. I shouldn't just use this forum to get my videos views. I apologize. I have a lot to learn and if this forum is filled with people like you who are willing to take time out of there day to help me out; it's unfair of me not to give anything in return.

I'm going to start posting here more often, and i apologize for breaking the forum rules, i didn't know where this post belonged.

So, that being said, if you don't mind. What exactly is the 180 degree rule and what other things do you think i can fix for the next installment in the series which i will be filming soon?

One of these film maker gurus can probably explain this better than I, but the 180 degree rule says that you should not cross an imaginary line that represents the stage line. I can already see this explanation is going to suck ... If you imagine that you're looking at your actors from across a stage line, you want to stay on the same side of that line with your camera. i.e. If actor "A" is on the left and actor "B" is on the right, you should not cut so that actor "A" is now on the right and actor "B" is now on the left. I hope that makes sense. You can look it up in the wikipedia as the 180 degree rule. You may also want to look up the 30 degree rule, although I don't think you violated that one; it's just a good thing to know about. Once you know the rules, of course, you will find occasions to break them, but you must first learn the rules.

Thanks alot man. I looked up videos on it and i think I understand now. Hopefully we will film the next scene soon and i will try to post it here before i put it up on Youtube for critique and such. I wish i hadn't been so eager to just get the video up and had actually taken time to make it the best it could be. Thanks again

I had an idea regarding the dilemma with the jet passing overhead. If you don't want to do another take after a jet rudely interrupts your dialog, stop talking and let the camera record the jet sounds until they fade away. Then, when you are editing, you can overlay the fading jet sounds on the next section of dialog so the jet doesn't just disappear. You'd probably want to fade the jet out a bit faster to preserve your next dialog track, but that won't be nearly as jarring as having the jet noise just disappear in the middle of a scene.

That's a good idea and i'll definitely look into it.

The only problem is that at this point i'm pretty much at the low end of editing software. meaning i dont have a separate audio and video track.

but i'm looking into getting something better through a friend of a friend so i'll definitely keep that in mind

This is Danny from Abbreviated Prod., before this it was Mike.

I want to thank everyone who contributed so far, and will continue to.

We'll definitely take a larger part on this forum, and not just use it to get critique.

you guys are all very knowledged and helpful.

thanks!
