Baltimore area Boy Wonder Chris LaMartina’s latest offering “Book Of Lore” should really solidify his reputation as one of the best indie horror filmmakers out there. If his last film, the quite good “Dead Teenagers” signaled the arrival of a serious new talent, this new film should attract bigger audiences and eager anticipation for whatever comes next.

LaMartina demonstrates such a strong command of the technical and the creative elements of his film, working as not only the director, co-writer but also editing among other things. The film is consistently entertaining and engrossing both because of the screenplay by LaMartina and Jimmy Georg but also the beautiful production, outstanding cinematography and special effects.

The story concerns the possible resurrection of a notorious serial killer, The Devil’s Left Hand, who terrorized a small Maryland town in 1985. Rick, a college student (well played by AJ Hyde) is agonizing over the disappearance of his girlfriend when he and some friends begin delving into the legend of the savage murderer, seemingly being fed evidence that suggests similarities between the famous case and the current missing person issue. Rick’s increasingly bloody journey to the truth unfolds stylishly and leisurely, building to a genuinely creepy, haunting climax.
