Auditioning Friends

Hi there, in the next few weeks I plan on filming my first short. It'll be roughly five minutes or so. I've been working on gathering equipment and laying out the groundwork. I have a small handful of friends that will be assisting with minor things. Basically a no-budget piece, just to get myself started and gain some experience. There won't be any dialogue, however there will be a voice over throughout. Two of my friends want the role of the sole character. My question is, how would I audition them to see who best fits the role if there isn't any scripted dialogue for them to read over? The overall character development is shown throughout and assisted by the narrator.

Do a screen test. See which one of them is more comfortable on camera, as well as who takes direction from you the best.

These are friends so you (most likely) aren't going to be getting fabulous performances from either of them. But, what you can expect is someone who can be patient with the set-ups, standing in for lighting, hitting their marks, keeping their eyes where you want them, etc.

Alright, yeah I see what you mean. It'll be my first attempt at it, so it'll surely be an interesting experience!
