SUPPOSEDLY there is a magic lantern hack to get rid of the white box on the 5D. This allows you to go into live view, never hit record, just start capturing the live view from the sensor to an external recorder (which is true 1080P). There are people on a another board I frequent that do it. It's a lot of hassle and expense for what would really be marginally better footage though (IMO).
