and the last thing keep it up.....

BY THE WAY I HAD A QUESTION FROM FILMMAKERS THAT WHO SETS THE RETAILS PRICE OF DVDS?? A FILMMAKER??OR THOSE STORES WHICH KEEP THESE DVDS????AND IF I PLAN DVD SALES....I AS A FILMMAKER WILL HAVE TO PROVIDE THE COPIES??OR I WILL JUST HAVE TO GIVE FEW COPIES AND STORES THEMSELVE WILL MAKE MORE AND MORE COPIES OF THE DVD?????

Stores are definitely NOT supposed to make copies of the DVDs. That would be rather difficult for them, since they'd have to recreate all of the packaging, etc. ... not to mention the fact that it would be illegal! The distributor sets the wholesale price for the DVD, and the suggested retail price. The retailer may sell it for the suggested retail price, or a discounted price, but the retailer always pays the wholesale price to the distributor.

If you get a UPC symbol, you can apply to sell your DVD through Amazon.com. They have the details on their web-site. That might give you some background information on how the retailer - supplier relationship works.

well i am in Pakistan so it means suppose after completing my movie i talk to 5 DVD stores in US i will have to send them the required quantity of DVDs??????????? and will also have to send posters etc to place on their stores???so that my movie can get promoted???????
well if i also try amazon will they also get a share from sales???and last thing is amazon abigstore??or only a website for online buying and selling???

i mean does it physically exists in any city???or country??????? i mean any office etc etc????

Amazon is strictly on-line, and every retailer keeps part of the purchase price.

Here's the deal with DVD reproduction. To have a high quality, long lasting DVD, you must have your DVD stamped from a glass master (generally called "replication", or "manufacturing"), which is different and better than burning the image onto a writable DVD (DVD-R) which is calld "duplication". When doing replication, because of the glass master required, the minimum quantity is typically 500 copies. The price per disk goes down quickly with higher quantities.

Therefore, it is not cost effective for a retailer to duplicate disks for resale. They may be carrying thousands of movies and selling a few copies of each one. The distributor for a particular movie will have the glass master made and have thousands of disks made that they will deliver to the retailers. When the retailers run low on stock, the distributor sends them more copies. If the distributor runs low, the DVD manufacturer already has the glass master and the plates used to print the artwork, so a second run is even more economical than the first.

The actual, manufactured DVD, with printing, a case, and shrink wrap will cost from $1.00-$1.50 (US) per disk, when manufactured in quantity. The per disk cost can easily fall below $1.00 for large runs.

can you tell me what is this glass master ???i mean is it a stamp????and being in Pakistan how can i get this stuff??????

secondly being a filmmaker i need a distributor for dvd sales too?????????? will a normal film distributor do the job or there are special DVD distributors?? And will they do something special which i cant do for selling my movie of DVD???? and by ART WORK you mean pictures on DVDs and on their covers?????

Thanks a lot for guiding me till now

I really don't know what a glass master looks like. It is something that is made by the DVD manufacturer. I guess it's some kind of mold or stamp. You only need to know that your distributor will have DVDs made in large quantities, using a contractor that will handle the DVD manufacturing.

Yes, the artwork is the printing on the DVD itself, the trapsheet which goes on the outside of the box, and any internal booklets, etc.

The distributor handles distribution, from theatrical to DVD. There may be distributors who do only theatrical releases and ones who do only DVD distribution.

Distributors have relationships with large retail outlets. They can definitely get a DVD in more places than I can. The amount the distributor keeps is all part of your distribution deal. In some cases I've heard of, the distributor might pay for the production of the movie. I'm sure they get a pretty hefty cut of profits in that case.

The way to look at that deal is to look at how much you're going to make on your movie if you self distribute and you sell 500 copies, versus how much you'll make if your distributor sells 50,000 copies and gives you 20%. You still made 20 times as much, and they did a lot of the work.

First and foremost, you must have a movie or movie script that is well suited to mainstream distribution. Once you've created something that has real market value, you should have no problem finding someone to help you market it for a share of the profits.
