A series of short conversations

Of course, almost all of what is scripted is dialogue and not action, but as a viewer, would a film get samey if there were recurring themes/scenarios?

I have written a script which relies heavily on the interactions of several characters. A fair few scenes start with nonsense conversations. I count at least 5 instances of conversations which do not contribute to the plot, but contribute to character building or minor side points/plots. Would you think ti was just trying to be filler?

Each conversation is joined part way through, some examples of which are:
"...which is why I would never go to France."
"I'm telling you it was fruit loaf, not fruit cake."
"What do you mean, what's Sven short for?"

Would you think ti was just trying to be filler?
Probably.

Have you seen the movie The Guard? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1540133/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
None of the bits between Sergeant Boyle and his mum have much bearing on the primary subject of the film.
I thought it was done well and not filler at all even though that's mostly what it was.

Does filler have to be filler?
Nope.
But it's tricky to pull off well as NOT being filler.

Be careful. Or good.
