Isn't one of the main reasons for a clapper to sync audio from the clap with the video? Would an ipad speaker be loud enough for this?

We used an iPad as a clapper on our recent shoot - using the excellent Movie*Slate app. The sound was plenty loud enough for us. And the app doubles as a very detailed shot log.
