A Bad Audio Fix?

One of my crew guys is recommending VO actors to pinch hit ADR for actors who cannot return for our pickup footage and have the VO actors redo all of the dialogue of the actors who cannot make the shoot. Does anyone recommend this?

Only if they do ALL of the lines by the actor; two different voices from one mouth will confuse people.

BTW, voice replacement of bit parts is standard practice, usually done by a loop group.

I spoke with people in 2 major post audio houses this week and their facilities have ADR rooms. They say the studios have VO artists who can mimic celebrity actors who ADR those actors when they get tied up in other productions.

Other than that, they echo what Alcove recommends.

Since we recorded the original audio outdoor, we need to record the ADR on location with the original cast who can make it and the VO actors will be bust re-recording all of the other dialogue of the actors who cannot return.

One of my actors is assisting me in putting together a team of VO actors.

That's what "movie magic" is, creating a believable illusion. In a "proper" audio post you replace everything except the dialog, and, in the case of ADR, you replace the dialog as well.

So you record/replace the dialog, perform the Foley, insert the sound effects, construct a background ambience and mix. If you do it right the audience believes in it completely.
