80's Video Effect

Hello everybody at indieTalk!
I'm somewhat of a noob in the editing department, but I'm pretty adept with Premiere, as well as a few other editors. My question is, how would one go about editing to give a film that cheesy, saturated 80's look? Examples of the sort of thing I'm looking for are films/TV shows like Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, The Toxic Avenger, Laserblast, etc. Do I need a new camera to get that effect, or can I use filters or plug-ins to get it?

There are numerous filters and plugins that will do exactly what you need. FCP and AE have them; I particularly love Digieffects Damage Skew ($49).

But you can mess it up for free with much of what is built-in to your NLE; saturate the color, add some ghosting and distortion, give it some scan lines. Pretty basic stuff.
