720 vs 1080

Well it looks like Nikon isn't going to announce a 1080p DSLR soon, so my options are such if the end of March is bare at Nikon.
1. Nikon DSLR with 720p
2. Canon (T2i, 7D, 5DMII) + Adapter (not sure which Adapter) for 1080p
3. Inexpensive Camcorder with 1080p

Now I would like to stick with using my Nikon lenses as they are seriously going to give me a better picture (more work yes, but better picture as I'll likely shoot "darker" pictures). I'd prefer not to go the #2 route (and I'd likely go T2i), but everyone I talk to says "1080p is the way to go now".

So my question is, for indie films is 1080p really a must? Considering that I'll go 1080p for sure as soon as Nikon releases a 1080p (hopefully in the fall)?

I'm not sure what the question is...

720P is fine for more application and exhibition. Panasonic's VARICAM is only 720P and used in broadcast all the time for narrative stuff.

Just shot a short on HVX-200. We used two cams, each with 16GB P2 cards. It was more beneficial shooting at 720 with the time restraint of our 8-hour shoot. Everything looks fine in 720p.
