Shooting for HD, Super 35? and What Ground Glass?

Super 35mm is 2.39:1, HD is 1.78:1, super 16mm is 1.78:1 and SD is 4:3 (the close to square format). Super 35mm is usually meant to be printed anamorphic and projected in scope in a movie theater. If you are shooting on 35mm film and finishing on HD for HD television broadcast, 1.78:/16x9 is...

Dark Reprieve-Where My First Feature Is Now

It is exciting what your film is doing Richard. I just didn't know what Loop Guide meant. I can't wait to see Dark Reprieve. Will it show up on Netflix then?

    urgent help needed!

You can do a couple things to make it appear less diffused. First thing is crank the contrast. Deeper shadows and brighter whites help make an image look sharper. De-saturating it a bit may help distinguish the tones between their skin and that yellow wall. Anything contrasting itself will...

    Good Docs Anyone?

American Teen looks interesting, but I've heard it feels a bit choreographed.

    Film Look Comparison

The second doesn't look at all like bleach bypass, except for the slight desaturation. It should be far more contrasty. The first one looks fine, but I don't know what is more cinematic as that's a matter of opinion.

    Lighting

If there are no lights on in the house, then the light will naturally have to come from outside the house through windows or doorways or whatever. What you want that light to be is up to you. It could be moonlight (usually gelled 1/2 blue), sodium vapor street lights (gelled orange), neon...

    Cannes 08 - Yes it's me Clive

It's true, people simply don't take what their doing seriously. It's like there's a line in the sand that people won't cross when it comes to making a movie. I don't know if its because they think they're not good enough or what. I don't know. But, when they go to the trouble to make a...

    Cannes 08 - Yes it's me Clive

A friend of mine is learning this the hard way. He made a wonderful little short he planned on making into a feature when he got the money. It premiered at Tribeca and has played in festivals all over the world for the past three years. (Last I heard it was playing in Iran.) Since then...

Lighting a Nightclub for HD shoot

...And stick a fan in front of it to break it up even more. Smoke will also help with separation from foreground to background with minimal lighting. Of course it needs to be backlit in order to be effective. This got me thinking... I wonder what it would look like to open the shutter and...

Lighting a Nightclub for HD shoot

If you get a DJ, find someone with a huge lighting set-up of their own. Some of those guys have all kinds of funky club lighting they bring to weddings and stuff. The best part of using a DJ's practicals is you don't have to hide them. You can shoot right into them if you want. And, you...

should you pay to enter your film in a festival?!?

If you can get into any one of the big festivals (Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, Berlin, Venice, Tribeca, SXSW...) you won't have to pay for another one again. In fact, most smaller festivals will pay the shipping fee just to have your film. Until then, you'll have to pay.
