Im a newbie to video editing. At the moment ive been using Virtual Dub. Anyone know any other low budget software for XP for a beginner?

I recently found this place, and glad i did!. Im totally new to this whole subject and Want to know, whats the best way to go around sound?. Should i record it on another device instead of the cam?.
