    30 FPS vs 24 FPS

I ended up having to shoot a project in 30fps once because I didn't have the option to shoot it in 24p. My professor at the time (during film school) also had this idea that frame rates didn't really matter in the first place, so he just had us all shoot with cameras that could only do 30fps...

    Arsonist on our tail

Early 90s fantasy shows often had that soft-focus aspect to their cinematography. Even the first season of New Doctor Who used it for whatever reason. And there was a tendency to bathe fantasy works in rich orange light, even before color-grading was around to further enhance that sort of thing...

    Arsonist on our tail

That, and some of this feels like an adventure show from the early 90s. I also rather enjoy the crushed sound effects. They're actually kinda charming.

    Arsonist on our tail

I dunno, ~Quality. When something looks and cuts like this, clearly trying to be humorous and wacky, I can completely forgive the lack of quality in the camera's resolution. In fact, I have a few friends who make a ton of comedic videos based entirely around their nutty performances, and they...

    Cinema Effect

If you don't have a dolly or a crane, though, then I would always advice against hand-held or basic-steadicam shots unless your film is supposed to have a sense of tension or eerie closeness. If you DO have a dolly or a crane, or maybe a slider, then by all means, use them.

    Cinema Effect

After thinking these questions over for many many years here are my suggestions for you. 1. You must shoot it in 24fps. This is a MUST right from the start. 2. You must take cinematography very seriously. It won't hurt you if you don't do it right. But lighting a scene without much thought...

Is my movie screwed before I start!?! PLEASE HELP!

Plenty of religious films are produced every year, especially through the Pure Flix production company. But they seem most often focused on the Protestant-born form of Christianity rather than the more tradition-heavy Catholic form. Most films that involve Catholicism to any major degree are...

Can this intro be created (purely) in After Effects?

If the question is asking can this be created with just Vanilla After Effects, then I guess, yeah: technically, if you spent months figuring out how to do things frame by frame and piece by piece and discovered a way to make CC Particle World do things it's not designed to do. Besides, in a...

watch Asian Adventure - Made by 15 year old

I would shy away from the all-too-common "strumming on a ukulele" music, because it makes the whole video seem chintzy. I can accept that kind of music over a Kickstarter video for a product that's either quirky, cute, and/or small, but it just doesn't work for something like this. You need...

What are the first things a budding filmmaker should learn?

I'm with jax_rox here. So many filmmakers seems to just follow along with what they think needs to be in a film based around whatever particular genre they're doing. If they're making a horror film, they'll shoot in the dark, or in dimly lit locations with a lot of dark blues, they might use...

    watch Bill & Maggie Trailers

So, I'm confused. And I don't really expect anything in particular, cause ya'll don't owe me a thing. That being said, 245 of ya took a look at this post, and no one had anything to say or share? I'm stumped. And I know most of those people didn't even click the videos, cause I don't have even...

    watch Bill & Maggie Trailers

So guys, after over 1 and 1/2 years of post-production, my SCAD Senior short film, "Bill & Maggie's Intergalactic Taxi Service" is finally finished and ready to send out to festivals. I'd be interested to know what some of you think of the trailers for my 10 minute short, so here are each of...

    visual effects in 80-90s

I'm what you could call a connoisseur of 80s and early 90s visual effects. And I've seen enough documentary footage to understand the thinking process behind a lot of it. Just like today they used blue-screens to photograph models and miniatures against rather than people. And they would use...

    YouTube series about films

I think before you take this any further, it'd be a good idea to treat it like a Kickstarter project, and create a short pitch video for the series you want to start. Not only would this allow us to see what the show might look like in terms of production value, but it would give you a way to...

    Forum Discussion

Didn't expect to see the chief admin say something this straightforward, but... yeah. Basically, that's the gist of it. I looked through those initial quotes in this discussion, and honestly, only the last few actually rubbed me the wrong way. Especially this one. "you say it was...

    Special effects question

The model-makers at WETA Workshop, on the Lord of the Rings films, referred to their models as "Big'atures," because the ultimate size of most of them filled out an entire sound-stage in some cases. The purported size of the actual locations and monuments were so massive within the stories...

    Is YouTube killing Filmmaking?

Actually... I just looked at what their third option is. Seems a big stretch to get someone to go to where-ever your business is for a mere $150 and do all of that stuff though. How would they manage to make that work? $150 isn't enough for travel expenses, and they would have to be good...

    Is YouTube killing Filmmaking?

Even if this offers a new viable option, talent and quality are still going to factor into the mix. And if you, as a business owner are terrible at shooting a compelling advert, and no one they know personally can do it any better, then they're going to need to look elsewhere to get the quality...

THE most successful filmmaker of all time is a fan of just using what you've got.

But every filmmaker will tell you this. Cause you have to start doing it in order to be doing it at all. It's kind of like asking, "How do I get clean teeth?" Yo! Just start brushing them, you doofus, and you'll already be doing better than you were before. This isn't some magical tip that'll...

Has anyone done captions for their movie?

Mr. Jones, I think it's more absurd and irrational that you wouldn't be willing to take the time to add the captions. Because sometimes a lack of captions makes it hard for even people who can hear just fine to understand your film. What if your sound work isn't all that good and the dialogue...
