Just watched first feature I helped shoot

Was boom op for about 1/3 of this movie, and watched the private screening at a local theater. It's very impressive! I found myself distracted looking for boom shadow or artifacts I could've caused, but saw nothing... and sound seemed pretty good. Editor was happy with the quality, so that...

    Worked boom for first time

I've always respected sound, but damn it can be physically taxing! I've done boom as far as setting up a mic stand and occasionally instructing someone to hold the mic in a place as I adjusted levels. But I just boomed a short for 12 hours and holy crap I'm beat.

Interesting (and scary) comparison of 5d3 to a cellphone cam

This is a comparison of the 5d3 IQ to a samsung note 3, which is now packing a 4k camera. I'll preface this with the obvious: yeah I know about sensor sizes and all the advantages/disadvantages of a DSLR. I've shot on one a lot, and am not going to be confused. But in a situation where the...

    skin tone issues

Hi guys, I have an issue with shooting skin tones that are extremely red (in this case a dark native american). I can't seem to grade the image where the skin tones look reasonable. I believe I was using halogens, although there was a little bit of mixed fluorescents which I tried to overpower...

What are the issues with using real weapons on set?

I will assume all responses come with the "I'm not responsible for your idiocy or accidents, and I don't advocate weapons on set" disclaimer. I would certainly rather use action replica guns, but those replicas are not that cheap (and the ones that are cheap, look cheap). I realize that things...

Newfound respect for you audio engis

Everyone tells filmmakers "Don't neglect audio! It's half the experience!" so I tried to capture decent audio. But holy crap, "decent" is subjective. After days of foley and bg recordings, I started on the captured audio. It might take me longer to edit the audio than it took our editor to do...

    70D shipping... anyone done tests?

I'm quite interested in its focus pulling abilities. This is a unique camera with a focus system that quickly establishes and pulls focus without hunting, so they say. It's unique in the design, where they have every pixel split, able to tell the direction of OOF. It's also a consumer level...

Manfrotto-compatible QR plates on sale (05/2013)

I just saw this when I went to buy a couple cheap QR clamps+plates, they're $9 cheaper than normal. http://www.calumetphoto.com/eng/product/calumet_quick_release_video_head_adapter/ck9007 This is *supposed to be* compatible with manfrotto QR video plates (according to cheesycam). I can't vouch...
