    Occupy Wall Street

From the film-making perspective, I think the "We are the 99%" site is more interesting: http://wearethe99percent.tumblr.com/ You have all those people posting a picture of themselves with a piece of paper telling their stories. Indie film-makers could help them make a video version of it. It...

Feedback on a 6 page script?

I like the script. I'm also in favor of keeping the V.O. There's something about repetition and V.O. I think it can work. "Hiroshima mon amour" and "Last year in Marienbad" actually consist of repetitive V.O. and hypnotic camera movements. But you should lose the 1st one: "It's been 4 days...

There are only 2 types of stories

    1) A hero goes on a journey. 2) A stranger comes to town. I heard that many years ago, I can’t remember where. It stuck with me, but, to this day, I can’t decide if it’s a useless classification or if there’s something profound to it. You can find many examples of 1 (Lord of the rings, Star...

    Keying Advice Needed!

I was not thinking about replacing the green screen by a brown screen. The background I was referring to is the futuristic metallic stuff Nate filled in. It's mainly blue. I was wondering if he could use one that would match the hues in the car.

    Keying Advice Needed!

Can you do the same but with a background that's mainly red or brown? The hues inside the car are kinda brownish. I'd like to see what it looks like when the colors in background and foreground match. Thanks.

Deathworld: Application and Move in process (read this)

I think 1G is fine. 2G didn't add much to the story anyway. What worries me is the 3rd act. The hero solves the mystery of the planet based on the observation that animals do not attack each other while fleeing from a fire or earthquake. That seems too trivial to me (of course they don't attack...

The photo-realism of Rango's CGI is astounding

I've seen "Avatar". I thought it had a heavy CGI feel. But it could have been because they were trying to depict an imaginary world while "Rango" was depicting our familiar recognizable world. If the "Rango" CGI team had tried a create an imaginary planet maybe I would have found it artificial...

    Super Summer Contest Stage Two!

I was a bit wary of re-reading stuff I had already read in Stage 1, but the scripts are actually very different. I was surprised by how much I found myself liking scripts based on concepts I didn't like in Stage 1. I'm voting for: 1) Gash 2) Insertion 3) Mantis I'm very impressed by the...

The photo-realism of Rango's CGI is astounding

I thought I could always distinguish CGI from real photography. But after watching Rango I think the line between the 2 is now definitively blurred. See for yourself. These are 2 screengrabs: Soon the job of production designer will be done by a computer guy with a digital library of...

watch Playing It Safe - Short Film

The actors are great. The colors are very desaturated. Is that the look of a DSLR with technicolor cinestyle?

    Super Summer Contest Stage One!

@Nate Thanks for posting the ending. That's a great story. I would never have guessed the dark ending from the 1st half. It starts like some inspirational tale in the Disney or Pixar style and ends like a horror movie. You sure can write. I hope you extensively enriched to Alex Cox' script for...

100% ADR -- stupid idea, or pure genius?

Examples of 100% ADRed movies: Fellini's. Apparently oftentimes at the shooting stage his scripts weren't finished. He would have his actors talk rubbish and then write the final dialogues during ADR, which apparently caused horrible discrepancies between lip movements and words. Or so I was...

    watch Beautiful Sketches

I'll hazard a complete interpretation based on what everybody has said. It's an allegory. The girl represents nature, the businessman industrialized societies. At the beginning the girl is healthy. She can skate, the crutches aren't present. She becomes progressively crippled through contact...

How do you feel about American remakes of foreign films?

I don't mind remakes. I've never tried to estimate the percentage of remakes that end up being better than the original. Could be 50%. I'm a big fan of Cameron Crowe's "Vanilla sky", a very underrated movie I think. I've watched the original Spanish movie too. To me "Vanilla sky" is vastly...

My guess is that it's about nature (girl) vs urban life (businessman).

    Sundance? REALLY?

Since it's has now been verified that this was a successful Sundance submission, I think we can now close a debate that's been ongoing in indietalk. For all I know, this could've been shot with the lousiest of cameras. STORY COMES FIRST!

Just how important is what camera you use?

For some reason, RED has managed to build for itself a portfolio that's much more impressive than Arri Alexa's. I don't know or am not interested in any of the movies in this list: http://www.arridigital.com/credits/complete/Feature But I've watched a few in this one...

    watch Zenthora, complete short film

The text at the beginning was difficult to read. Maybe you could use another color. That ferret laser idea is genius. It deserves to become viral.

    Discussing Hitchcock

Ernest: "Hitchcock was meticulous in his preproduction and planning stage. He would storyboard the entire movie as he saw it in his mind, editing it shot by shot before production actually began." This is interesting to me. I was watching the documentary "The cutting edge" recommended by Mr...
