    Composing for comedies

I was wondering how some other composers here approached composing for comedies. It seems to me that comedy score music tends to be written in an non-orchestral "song" format, such as a jazz piece, etc. When the movie is a dramatic comedy, the music tends to be more classical but...

Who is your favorite film composer?

Like others have said, John Williams. Although, it seems lately even though his music is more refined, it's less memorable. Think of Superman, the original Star Wars trilogy, Jaws, E.T., Hook, Indiana Jones, etc. Then think of his more recent movies. How many people would know Battle of the...

Edit to Score or Score to Edit

As a composer, I personally like to see something on the screen and write music accordingly. This is a guess, but I would assume most composers are not like that. Most composers like to have creative freedom and move the music according to what's good for the sound. An example that is...

    Can someone explain this?

What you said sounds right, based on what I'm seeing. Good to know, thanks!

    Orchestral scores

Check out my music. I also do some electronic music, but mostly orchestral. A Champion's Call and Summer are probably the most sweeping of the music I have uploaded. http://soundcloud.com/elmakai I'm not looking to get paid unless you are on a large budget.

    Can someone explain this?

Here's another clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvTT29cavKo Look at the action sequences, especially 0:28.

    Can someone explain this?

This is not a very clear example, but if you know the film well enough look at 2:03 and 2:40 (when zooming into the guy's face): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU3wPWYV6HQ I've seen this technique done in a lot of movies such as Gladiator and 300 but I can't pinpoint what it is. To me, it...

watch Experimental Short Film shot on 5D - What do you think?

I concur with others, the camera quality was very good. I enjoyed the film overall. I particularly like the line "I will pierce your feet, so that you can't walk. I will pierce your stomach, so that you can't breathe. I will pierce your heart, so that you can't find your love for me." Haunting.

    Creative expression vs. artistic vision

I remember watching the director's commentary on Vanilla Sky, and he liked to do that, but not with soundtrack music, but various songs. There was a scene when Tom Cruise was talking to Kurt Russell where he just starts dancing, and the director was talking about the song that was playing that...

    Creative expression vs. artistic vision

I was curious from all the filmmakers out there, how much freedom do you like to give composers? Do you like to give general ideas and let them create expressively, or do you like to be specific to your own vision of the film? The same with composers, do you like to be given specific or...

    watch Some of my work

Thanks scoop! I never got the criticism about the music staying in one place, but now you mention it, I completely agree. It's like a "aha! duh" moment for me, lol. As far as writing goes, I pretty much do what you do, with the exception that it seems to lead nowhere without something to...

    watch Some of my work

I'd just like to put a few links out of my music composition. I'm curious to know what others think. Of course, when I let my friends listen they tell me how great it is, so maybe I would get a less bias opinion. :) http://soundcloud.com/elmakai/a-champions-call...

Yup, I know it's a hard field to break through, though I'm happy if I never become famous. :)

    Hello

Hello. I'm taking a moment here to introduce myself. I'm predominately a composer, with very little movie making experience. I've always been facinated by the filmmaking process, so signing up here and talking to filmmakers seemed logical. :) Looking foward to talking with you guys.
