    Nodes vs Layers

Very nice. Since I've been diving into Resolve and using node based workflows for color, I've also been interested in trying it out for vfx/compositing, and very curious about trying out Nuke and Fusion. I feel it would definitely be a major learning curve, being someone who learned everything...

    archived-videos Urban clothing promo

Overall pretty cool. I kinda agree about the first shot though. I'm kinda weird, but the texture from his facial hair makes me uncomfortable haha. And I kind of think it could probably be cut down to 30 seconds with faster pacing, and be even better and punchier.

Anyone cool with answering a few questions?

I'm starting to feel really young now haha. No wonder there is such an incredible wealth of knowledge on this site. Here it goes. 1) How long have you been making films? What got you started? Why do you make films now? I released my first short film in March 2006. it was awful but I'm glad I...

Failure at writing a screenplay, whats the reason?

I kinda think I know how you feel. Once I kept learning and learning, I started taking myself really seriously. And as a result, it took me 10 times longer to write and the end results weren't nearly as good. I found that I shouldn't take it so seriously. Make it fun and use it as a way of...

Pro x powerbase 70, how do I get it off?

I have a couple of those. You have to hold down the release you were messing with with one hand and then use the other hand to pull it off. Maybe to have to pull hard on it, though probably not too hard. If it still doesn't work, it may be something wrong with the battery you got or the mount...

    Joy

This is a film I've been on the fence about watching. Looks like I'll have to check it out now though. Better go see if Redbox is carrying it yet.

editing EDITING: Best free editing software?

Yeah, I'd deff recommend Resolve as it's incredible what they allow you to have access to in their free version. Though yeah, I guess the one drawback is it does take a bit more powerful of a computer. But worth the try I would think. Note: wow this thread is old.

    Movie idea. Opinions need please!!

I feel like that story has definitely been done before. Reminds me of Eagle Eye and other similar films. Doesn't mean you shouldn't do it though. Just find a way to give it an original spin. Also, sounds like you're still primarily just explaining the first act. The set up. What happens in...

editing What motion graphics techniques do I need to have?

Couldn't agree more haha. That's gotta be one of my biggest pet peeves, right behind those people who make after effects templates based off VideoCopilot tutorials and then sell them as templates on stock footage sites. :grumpy: I would say do you feel you can make some quality motion...

editing I need to make my dialogue sound like this. Please help.

Great advice from Utopia. I think it's going to have to be one of those things you have to play around with a bit until you get it just how you want it to be. But I would deff start with what Utopia said ;)

Is it a big no-no to make it all a dream?

I agree with the others that there should be no restrictions in writing and creativity. That being said, I'd encourage you to challenge yourself to find a way to have that kind of "it was all just a dream" twist, but hopefully in a more original way.

    New filming need legitimate advice

I would say GH4 or Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Being able to change lenses is definitely crucial. And if you're new and learning, it's crucial to force yourself to shoot manually as opposed to automatic. Learn how to change exposure, f-stop, shutter, ISO/ASA, frame rates, aspect ratios, picture...

What are some movies that influenced you?

Anything by Nicholas Winding Refn, I really enjoy and take a lot from. Also loved Place Beyond the Pines. Beautiful pacing all throughout that one.

Anyone ever use a fog/smoke machine on a shoot?

I'll just say out of experience that I've used a cheap fog machine from Spencer's. Worked okay the first time but they easily get clogged and stop working. By the 2nd time it was pretty much a waste of time and money. FilmTools.com sells haze and fog spray cans that can be an interesting...

    Does the Economist know something?

I'm probably ignorant, but I always feel a huge chunk of it is luck. There's been some great films that didn't do well at the box office, and some awful films that made bank. A lot of it perhaps depends on the current circumstances in culture. One of my favs, Donnie Darko, did awful because...

lighting How to light a BLUE scene

^This. I would say use gels as best as possible and then make necessary adjustments in color grading. Gels can knock down exposure though so make sure you have a bright enough light.
