editing How to create Hulu's "Shut Eye" neon?

UPDATE: C4D lite doesn't have global illumination, so the journey pretty much stopped there.

Got a new short film in the can mid-2016. I shared it once but didn't get much traction in the way of feedback and commentary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlU9unYxWMg

editing How to create Hulu's "Shut Eye" neon?

Thanks for the response, it seems that's the proper method. I never thought of darkening in post. I assume the process of darkening it goes something like making an alpha channel for the areas that you want to stay bright, then darkening the layer, then colorizing the bright areas, then adding...

editing How to create Hulu's "Shut Eye" neon?

Does anyone have a direction they can point me in to creating my own version of this intro? Specifically the neon signs (and how they affect the surrounding scene). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXTfBiHkfA4 (it starts about a minute into the trailer) Thank you! Anyone who helps me gets a...

A new short film by yours truly. Excited to share it with you guys, as I've been mostly radio silent for months. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlU9unYxWMg

lighting Aluminum foil to reflect light

I think reflection of the camera would only be an issue if you have a lot of movement where the angle of the shot is directly perpendicular to the foil. Use the matte side of the foil just to be sure. Make sure the foil doesn't affect your light in a way that causes a pattern. You'll get a...

    ND filter for filming

Why are you avoiding a vari-ND? I've used both fixed and vari; as long as you buy good quality glass, the vari is VASTLY superior in terms of time management, price, cleanliness, continuous light changes during recording, storage space, the list goes on and on.

    found footage camera?

use a shitty VHS camcorder. or a RED. it doesn't really matter. i'd probably recommend getting a camera with a servo zoom.

editing Looking for indoor gunshot SFX

Every single sound effect I've come across online (paid or free) is just absolutely atrocious. Where do you guys get your gunshot sounds? I can't get a single one of these to sound like it belongs with the rest of the audio. Seriously, I'm amazed with how unbelievably bad the gunshot sound...

Director already wrote shot list (I'm DP)

Thanks guys. Had a short conversation with him about scheduling a couple meetings next week to finish the shotlist together. His response was completely understanding if not apologetic. I told him I liked what he had which revealed that he did want to keep the first scene (two pages) as it had...

Director already wrote shot list (I'm DP)

Hey guys, I'm also in an unfamiliar situation with my current Director/DP relationship. We have just been handed the finalized script from our writer and now we're in pre-prod for the project. The director is really excited to direct it and has already written a shot list for the first two...

    Questions about discovery call

I do think 45 days is excessive for an hour of content. We should be able to get a 3-minute show done every shoot day. Would it be a good idea to ask what level of production value they're looking for? I don't want to make them feel like their money is only going to get them a certain level of...

    Questions about discovery call

I appreciate the feedback. On question 1 it's good to hear your suggestions on questions I should ask, but I'm more curious about questions they'll ask me. Obviously just generals. On question 2 I should clarify that I don't think they expect quite the same production value as an HBO production...

    Questions about discovery call

Hey guys, I've been contacted by an agency about leading the entire production on a 45 day shoot. It's supposed to be twenty 3-minute episodes that emulate HBO's Silicon Valley. The budget is $200k. I'm supposed to have a discovery call tomorrow with the media buying company on behalf of the...

archived-videos What do you think of the latest music vid?

I have begun turning down a lot of offers for paid video work (like music videos) to focus on my art. I needed to reclaim the mental space and physical energy that those projects were taking from me. As I've already got a day job, it wasn't a huge hit financially. Hands down the best decision...
