cinematography Manual Focus vs. Auto Focus - Which One Is Better?

I guess it could depend on what you are filming. For a narrative style filming, definitely manual focus. Because as your characters move around in a scene, the camera can start to hunt for focus. Not a very desirable effect for your film.

Can I make an actor's teeth look whiter?

Found it interesting they mention "over exposing" the film just a bit, know they'd be color grading. Where as with digital, we try to under expose just a tad bit to preserve the highlight detail.

Uh oh - Apocalypse Now as SF?

Just read the article you linked. Was suprised to read my Cousin wrote the script (Tony Giglio, actually he's my fathers cousins son, so I think that makes him my 3rd cousin).

    23.98p or 24p?

Was curious because My new camera listed frame rates as 23.98p, 24p, 25p, 29.97p, and 30p I was, wanted to know when I'd use one over the other. And ItDonnedOnMe, I think you hit on what I had remembered reading. That using dual video/audio systems, the audio would not sync up properly when...

Quality lenses 500 and below micro 4/3 bmpcc

I've bought 2 lens so far for the pocket cam. I picked up the panasonic 12-35 IS f2.8. That's a bit out of your prices range though. Also bout the Olympus 45 f1.8. As far as prime lens go, I'm planning on started with 3 (45 f1.8 being the first). I want to get a fast 17mm (about a 50mm on full...

what do I need for my shitty tripod?

I have something similar to that for my Vinten VB tripod. This was my thinking when originally buying it. Works great for easily moving the camera around from setup t osetup. But found even on a smooth surface, its not smooth enough to film with.

    23.98p or 24p?

If I'm reading what I'm finding on the web correctly, if I am delivering for NTSC broadcast TV, I'd want to shoot in 23.98. But since I'm pretty much filming for YouTube or web delivery, I'm good at 24p. Waiting for the audio guys to chime in. Thought there was an audio sync issue that could...

    Old Boy remake coming up!

I saw Brotherhood of the wolf (French film, subtitled), at a local theater. Bought it on DVD when I found out it had an English dubbed track. Before seeing the red band trailer, I had never heard of Old Boy. I will see the remake, and look for the original on Netflix. I liked the orginial...

    23.98p or 24p?

23.98p or 24p? Was going to write a big long question, but the long and short, when do I use one over the other? Have search the web, read some older forum post and articles. I understand the history behind 23.98 and 29.97. I'm just still a bit foggy on when I would want to use one over the...

    BlackMagic announces new camera

On the same forum, and in another thread, asking about the user manual for the pocket camera, John just posted this..... The software is basically the same. There aren't any differences aside from two new features that have just been added in the last few days. One is AF. The other is a more...

    BlackMagic announces new camera

John Brawley, in another forum I read, just posts this picture of the pocket cam. I asked if he had any new footage he was releasing. Said he'd been shooting with it, but nothing to release yet. This photo is the pocket cam with hotrod pl mount, and zeiss ultra speed 6mm s16 lens.

    Editing Keyboard/Mice/Pad?

I have a a contour, and while its decent, I have to say I end up going back to my keyboard. Once you learn the keyboard short cuts for the basic functions, it really is all you need. Sometimes ill keep a hand on the shuttle pro, when going frame by frame, the wheel works great.

cinematography Polarizer side by side comparisons

I have a 77mm Genus Variable ND filter. While its not perfect, it works. I've also purchased some regular ND filters, in varying degrees of reduction. I've read the non variable ones seem to be a bit sharper. Now I've recently started reading about IR ND filters, I'm still clueless about...

Need to figure out what this effect is called.

That clip looks like everything shakes. Towards the end it looks like the background might have more of a shake then the foreground. I'm thinking this could be done in After Effects. While I'm learning AE myself, it seems there should be an effect to add shake to a video. Restrict its...
