working out who / what is required for your feature film crew

I'm not trying to get combative here man but you can't completely discount that those films started with a small crew and tiny budget. I completely agree that they needed the Hollywood treatment to market them and technically sound for widespread distribution. But this all happened after...

    Gerard from Miami

Welcome! I'm somewhat new here myself but already I've seen some great discussion. And I envy you being in the Miami area. My winter is 5-6 months so anything sunny looks preferable!

working out who / what is required for your feature film crew

I was also thinking of Paranormal Activity, which is only 5-7 years old. Started with a tiny crew, got the right amount of attention, and now it's a hugely profitable franchise.

color-grading Question about matching shots in color grading.

DaVinci Resolve Lite is free to download and pretty powerful. Harmonica44, I can tell you are hard working and dedicated to filmmaking. With all due respect though, do you ever think you're biting off more than you can chew? I'm a new user here but this seems to be a recurring thing every time...

Nothing wrong with asking permission though. And keep us posted!

cinematography Please Critique some Frame Grabs from upcoming short film

Good god man, that's some really nice looking work. I love how you fogged the interior shots to get some atmosphere out of the natural (?) light.

Trying to make shots of animals more interesting.

Lens options aside, there are some really good points here about the business decision. What do you think is going to damage your relationship with this guy more - warning him about the lens limitation, or handing him footage that he may not like after he spent the cash to send you there?

    Police Uniform

There are definitely legality issues when using real department insignia. Scorsese famously had to change the Massachusetts State Police logo in The Departed when the commonwealth wouldn't license it.

Film music all sounding the same?

Anyone watch Game of Thrones? In the second to last episode of the last season (Castle Black) they used the BWAAANG sound prominently in lieu of a musical score, as the horn that the night watch sounded. I thought it was very effective in that context.

cinematography Camera settings vs. make up.

I don't know the first thing about makeup so unfortunately I can't give much advice here. However.. How flexible is the producer on this? I would much rather do the extra work in post. Has the producer seen the test footage with the changes you made? If you change all these settings in camera...

Uncharted Fan Film Whence the Devil Came

I have never played Uncharted but you have my attention with the Last of Us fan film. That game was incredible. I will definitely be checking out those films tonight.

Is it worth going to film school to build connections?

Saying nothing about the quality of the education at those cheaper schools, if you want connections you may need to pay big bucks for a more well-known school. Are you a fan of Breaking Bad? The show runner Vince Gilligan recorded podcasts for each episode of the show. In the podcast for...

character How to write this character when introducing him?

I'm not an experienced writer but I've always heard that you never write the viewer's experience into the script. Either they'll get it or they won't. The reason it works with Taken is because it's Liam Neeson that recognizes the voice. It's actually happening to a character on screen. If you...

    Use of Copyright Material

My full time job is in risk management. If you were one of my clients, I would be extremely concerned about the way you're rationalizing the use of somebody else's copyrighted work. They say it's better to ask for forgiveness than seek permission, but in this case I would completely disagree...

    My favourite gear

I almost ignored this as shameless self-promotion but I'm glad I didn't. That follow focus is going on my gear-to-buy list.

How to Manage Overheating of DSLR'S

At the risk of derailing the OP's original topic, the sermon will be in the 15-30 minute range. I had planned on using the 5D as a backup camera anyway due to the recording length issues, so that information regarding the file size is very helpful to know. Church temperature will be up in the...

Seeking Advice. First Project. 48hr-film contest.

That's awesome! I can safely say that not a single team used horses at the New Hampshire 48HFP this year. One team did get a DeLorean, though.....

How to Manage Overheating of DSLR'S

ItDonnedOnMe, it's great to hear that you haven't had that problem. I only know about the overheating "issue" from reading message boards about it. I personally have never had it overheat either but then I have always been wary of pushing it to that point. I am shooting a church sermon later...

How to Manage Overheating of DSLR'S

The common sense answer is to know your camera and its limitations. For example I use a 5Dii which can't go for more than 10-15 continuous recording before it overheats. So we know that camera cannot shoot any extra-long oners. If you do have any long takes, take advantage of the time between...

    Shooting faster than 24 fps?

28 Days Later also used this effect. During the more intense scenes, the "infected" were shot with a very fast shutter speed, and the effect was kind of unsettling.
