    SFX forum

Is there a central web clearinghouse to connect with some sci-fi SFX folks? I'm especially interested in finding someone in the US Pacific Northwest who can help develop a couple of cool, original sci-fi costumes and helmets from sketches.

Resources for pitching TV pilot to investors

Completely agree. It certainly does take a healthy combination of business acumen and artistic vision to be a successful film producer. My personal interest is only to create art, I will only be raising capital from accredited investors who are well aware of the astronomical odds of a return...

Why Creatives Don't Succeed in 9-to-5 jobs

Great article relevant for creative-types. Don't let anybody put you in a box if you don't fit. http://elitedaily.com/money/nine-fives-make-no-sense-creatives/954674/

Resources for pitching TV pilot to investors

I have never met a true artist in the former category. The ones I know have total confidence in their ability and would not work for anybody else. The quality I admire most and the thing I look for when hiring/working with anybody is the ability to make decisions quickly. People who have to...

I only located a production company this week. They've got some Emmys in the trophy case, so they know what they're doing. I'll be relying on the prodco to recommend a showrunner if the series goes anywhere. The focus right now is the demo reel. I will of course find out if there's a home for it...

    Vacuum forming

Vacuum forming is the process they use to make the Star Wars uniforms, weapons, ect. It's very simple and you can make your own vacuum forming table or buy one. You can pretty much vacuum form anything. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEvNI3ZgeBY

Resources for pitching TV pilot to investors

In my day job business, I had a smug little loan officer at a bank tell me my projections were unrealistic and no start-ups ever make a million dollars their first year. We started with ZERO money in the bank and I made it a personal mission to put $1 Million on the books our first year. For 11...

I appreciate that, Audio. I think we might have a philosophical difference of opinion if you feel Hollywood does not need to improve its content or reality TV is not an insult to the 1200 cc homo sapien brain. Nor did I say all indie music is art, but the fact is, thanks to new media I'm sitting...

how would you help a beginner scriptwriter?

For me, the Story is God. If you had to pick sides to get killed on the battlefield over, I would gladly sacrifice my life for the Story. For me, good stories never take more than 1-week to write (although, I can go six months or 1-year between them). Stories usually come from a still life I...

    Vacuum forming

Anybody have experience with vacuum forming for sci-fi props? Helmets, etc. I am wondering if there are patterns you can buy and maybe modify so you don't have to reinvent the wheel? Also, if acrylic plastic will distort and look wonky on film for a helmet visor? Or if it needs to be glass?

I hope most people are on this forum because they're frustrated with the Hollywood insulting everybody's intelligence with the garbage they produce. I look at independent film - and TV - like indie music. Great art performed by those who wrote it for a more thoughtful audience to enjoy. It's...

Thanks, AudioPostExpert, I understand it will be difficult, but that is what interests me. I want to take a shot at the dragon everybody says can't be whooped. Like I said, I am not betting the rent money. It's a passion project. I appreciate the size and complexity of the film and TV industry...

Resources for pitching TV pilot to investors

It's probably worth mentioning since this is a business section, in my (unrelated to film) business, I have raised a considerable amount of capital from investors and not a living soul has ever asked to read our business plan. First off, nowadays investors rely entirely on a pitch deck...

Will do, thanks for the recommendation. That said, if a picture is worth 1,000 words, I'm betting a full-size mock-up of a flying saucer from the series people can sit in and ooo and ahhh over trumps a good business plan.

Resources for pitching TV pilot to investors

Very interesting. I never would have thought to do it any other way. Why hand over 90% of your profits and total creative control to a studio whizkid for the exact same odds of it getting a hit? I will definitely be researching it a lot better before pilot time. The plan is for it to be a...

Resources for pitching TV pilot to investors

I totally understand that, TV is a very bizarre business. Even from the outside looking in as an advertiser, the price for the exact same time slot to run your commercial can change from day to day. The algorithm they use to determine the cost for advertising must look like the chalkboard in A...

Resources for pitching TV pilot to investors

Ooooo, that looks like a very great resource. I will definitely have a look at it. My "day job" I own my own C-corp, so I'm somewhat savvy - although, I'm sure there are many here who know more - about how investment works. Just from what I've looked into it so far TV is a bit different than...

Gotcha, kinda what I figured. I just retained the production company this week, so we haven't gotten that far in the conversation. Just getting ahead of myself as usual. You wouldn't happen to know if sometimes networks pick up series for a specific region or their decisions are nationwide?
