Yeah it's a bit of a Catch 22. I wouldn't advocate a one man band approach to narrative production, but nonetheless, there many and good reasons why a filmmaker should acquire a baseline of skills such as audio, lighting, shooting and performing. Ultimately you ARE responsible for all of them...

I had a JVC HD100 with about 400 hours on the tape heads that blew up. Out of warranty. Had a Canon 20d with 10k actuations that stopped working cuz the shutter. Out of warranty. I've been running my GH2's like sled dogs for a few years now. No issues.
