Your Dream Job & Your Real Job

I'm about the same age as you and I can empathize. I didn't want to get a "real job" yet, so I went to grad school.

    archived-videos New Teleporting Effects

One problem I see is that any sci-fi fan will instantly recognize that the ship is a Viper MK 7 from BSG spray painted black. Instead of filming a model on green screen, just have someone do an original CG model and animate the thing. To pull of the miniature effect properly you would have to...

series George Lucas says ESB is the worst film in the series.

Did he mean the worst film in the OT? Than I'd be inclined to agree with him. It doesn't have an ending, some of the Dagobah scenes really drag on etc.

Evaluating concepts a.k.a. how to pick what to write next?

I have a bunch of concepts / log lines for features and I'm having hard time picking which one to work on. My IRL friends seem to like most, if not all, of them but I can't tell if they are just being nice. So, how do you evaluate if a concept is good enough to warrant spending hundreds of...

film-school Would you say film schools/programs are "cliquey"?

Just an idea, you could use the internet to have someone else produce your short scripts? Post them on forums like this and offer them to aspiring director / producers. Or find a director / producer who has the resources and talent and offer to write them something from scratch. That's something...

failed shoot, it needed to happen

Solution = don't use the fraking slider. Improvise, adapt, overcome. Paying 8 grand for a half assed short still beats paying 8 grand for one shot.

Why don't people understand my film?

I actually watched it now. The quoted part was was the only thing I didn't get and I don't think getting it is really relevant to the story. It's quite clear that the boss is testing his loyalty. IMHO it's fine the way it is. Edit: I guess this could have been conveyed by adding some dialogue...

Why don't people understand my film?

Add a scene in the beginning where the enforcer is given the assignment by the mob boss? Edit: or to the end and make it a flashback while the enforcer is driving off to Baltimore or something. (I haven't watched it yet so I don't know if these will fit into the story.)

    The Offing [Short Crime Film]

I'm guessing You're planning on filming this yourself based on the camera directions? You might want to include short physical descriptions of the characters so they are easier to distinguish in the reader's mind, even if you end up casting actors who look nothing like them. Also, the two...

Feedback on a short sci-fi script?

Thanks! I'll rewrite the ending. Your version is really cool, but I don't think it fits the Firefly-esque world / tone I was going for. Anyone else? Edit: Taking the current draft down for a rewrite.

Feedback on a short sci-fi script?

I wrote like a 90 percent new short based on the scenes I was going to add to the previous version. Please give feedback on this new version! Link: down for a rewrite

editing What do you pay for in your shorts?

The stuff you can't do yourself. For me it's sound and acting. After those, I'd put in as much money into production design as possible to make the film look amazing.
