archived-videos My very first short film (Need Critique)

I'm really surprised how much moire there was on the opening ... figured the D800 would be better than that. Low light stuff was really noisy (2:00), and that's a function of the camera, too. Light those better with appropriate ratios, and then lower light in post or you'll get tons of noise...

Aspiring to be an On-set Photographer

When doing unit stills and on set, make good friends with the AD, but especially the boom op. You're going to be his shadow. He knows where to stand. Never get in the shots or cast a shadow into frame. Watch for it continually. You can usually stand next to a light, too, as long as you don't get...

cinematography Advice On Shooting Time Lapse Video

Green screen is probably the best technique, but you need to make sure nobody enters the area where he'll be sitting ... or even next to it or in front (like a bartender). A closeup is probably better to avoid those issues. Remove the chairs on the background scene, then shoot it greenscreen...

    cinematography Portrait Photography

Tell them "I'll take pics only after the pro you hired takes pics". Do Not Shoot the Wedding as the sole photographer. There are a ton of things to think about which you do not know, including how to shoot events, how to shoot portraits, how to shoot people in motion, or how to use a flash...

cinematography Apple ad, shot on iPhones.

Yeah, I don't know if it's compression artifacts from the filming or the youtubing, but the low light stuff is not very good even in HD. Lots of posterization and artifacts, and I really don't like the lens flare. That flare is probably my biggest complaint about the video quality. However...

editing Audio Post Workflow - video vs wav

The good news is, that got rid of the crickets.

editing I thnk I understand what a LUT is, but...

As far as the use I've had for LUTs, it is just a mapping of one value to another. In my case, I had to undo cinestyle, which is a super flat style. All my LUT did was map medium high values to high, and medium low values to low, like an s-curve. In computer science, a LUT is just a mapping...

Wow, is that completely clipped at the front?

editing Audio Post Workflow - video vs wav

Is "cricket" the actual sound of the insect? Or is that a sound-guy term for something?

editing Loudness or, How to measure what doesn't exist?

It doesn't just sound like a nightmare, it is a nightmare for the uninitiated. A video editor could do it with the right tools and perfect studio sound, but you guys have job security. Anything that's difficult, and there's going to be a lot, will require a pro. Edit: and that doesn't even count...

editing Loudness or, How to measure what doesn't exist?

Sure it can. If loudness depends on db, and it does, then it is correlated. It also depends on the frequency of the track. That's not what correlation means, at least not where I am or in any of the scholarly papers I've read. Correlation is a statistical term to determine if something depends...

editing Loudness or, How to measure what doesn't exist?

Also, the broadcast reqs usually had a max momentary lufs... How do you look for and how do you correct that? And... What is it?

editing Loudness or, How to measure what doesn't exist?

I had to study this a bit just recently when processing sound for possible broadcast. I could've used this info then! The broadcast requirements are all in loudness (and with different units!), and it was a completely new concept to me. I got a plugin to help with this, but didn't really...

    Works in the Public Domain

If you base anything on something NOT in the public domain, e.g. a new movie based on PD works, then it's obviously not PD and likely copyrighted. The recent Romeo and Juliette with DiCaprio is a good example. That's copyrighted, but you can still use all the words that were used. If you go to...

cinematography Camera angles/movement to emphasise mental imbalance in character.

That's exactly the effect I was talking about above. Okay, maybe just a CU, not ECU. With a wide angle, you have to get right up in the actor's face and it's very distracting to them not to lose sight of where they're looking. Edit: Here's a screenshot from a short I did. While she was...

cinematography Camera angles/movement to emphasise mental imbalance in character.

Yeah, don't overuse a gimmick. If it makes sense, do it, but it should add to the effect of the scene, not create the scene. Don't do any effect because you heard you're supposed to use it. Instead, use effects to enhance what's already happening on screen to make it more immersive or connect...

cinematography Camera angles/movement to emphasise mental imbalance in character.

Wide angle ecu might look good. I used a low dutch angle when someone had an episode, and added a tiny amount of radial blur. It was enough to make it feel really surreal in a flashback scene.

    dslr

If it can't do it now, magic lantern won't allow it to do it later. In your case, the Xti does not record video. ML can handle issues like fixing the volume controls for recording in-camera so that you don't have to deal with automatic gain control. If you have a high-output, low noise preamp...

    Audio Equipment

btw, I did look at that. In fact, I looked at it first and was seriously considering it, and it should be added to the "look at" list. Two things really turned me off. The biggest was the poor battery life, and the second was the digital pots, which have an audible "step" when they're turned...
