sound I'm trying to post sound samples to get feedback.

Cool thread, Harmonica :D I'll check out your test recordings when I get back from work. Alcove, can you explain what you mean by this: If Harmonica has one mic and has the recorder set up to record in mono, do you mean he should set up the recorder so it records the same mono track across...

    Super Basic Sound Setup

I've got a Zoom H4N; I like it, it does the job, but if I had to buy it again... I wouldn't. The pre-amps are weak, it is not designed for dialogue and the sound level is consequently very low. If I had to go again, and I know it's out of your budget, but I'd push my budget to $550-600, get a...

    A professional script reader's process

A fascinating find, thanks very much, Flicker. With all the other recent threads about screenwriting, this one has really set my heart racing. How awesome it feels to receive little titbits of insider information :D

Should I only 'write what I know'?

Agree with most of the above, I think it is more relevant to emotions and very subjective "human" experiences. You can't (or perhaps more precisely, it is very difficult to) write about the pain of addiction or losing a loved one or the realisation your relationship is built on a foundation of...

Oh that was good fun! Cool visuals, mad voice-overs and a nice twist at the end, I love stuff like this :D

    Quick question regarding audio...

Separate audio is definitely the way to go dude, you won't regret it. You'll find it much easier to get Foley, you'll be able to monitor your input and you'll learn a lot more about sound design than if you just plugged the VideoMic into your camera.

Good ways to fake desert location.

How about: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/19460334 You could probably find some stock clips/archive footage of middle eastern desert to use as an establishing shot, then for close-ups just head out to some open land and get clever with your camera angles. A Google search of "Saskatchewan...

cinematography That dreamy soft focus look, i.e. Big Fish

Vaseline on the lens? lol, I have a twenty-year old photography book that recommends this, but I've never had the guts to try it. Does anyone still do this? :D

Good ways to fake desert location.

What type of desert? The Sahara looks different to Death Valley, which looks different to Monument Valley, etc. Have you got a look you're going for, or do you just need an empty expanse of wasteland?

How realistic should a super dark thriller be?

Have you seen any 24? Jack's always stuck on his own for a variety of insane reasons: 1) He's undercover. Backup would blow his cover. 2) The terrorists have a grudge against him. If he calls for backup, they'll execute his daughter. 3) In order to catch the bad guys, he has to do something...

Will this type of villain work?

Wow, this thread has really opened my eyes. Thanks, GoaB, for introducing me to a whole new level of horror that I was completely oblivious to.

    editing Foley is a nightmare

Wow, thanks very much guys! Alcove, great links, I now feel slightly more confident that I can do this. It's good to know about the FX vs Foley distinction as well. I think I'll give it a proper go this evening with my band of filmmaking brothers. It's only a practice short that we're working...

    editing Foley is a nightmare

One of the things I love about sound is how it allows you to be really creative when replicating sound effects. My favourite moment so far was creating a neck-slice sound effect by slicing a melon, and nearly hacking off one of my fingers in the process. A small price to pay for realism :yes...

    editing Foley is a nightmare

I hope it was someone you knew, rather than some random guy you happened to be passing... "Dude, that sounds awesome! I gotta get that on tape..." ;) Aye, fair enough. I did have a list of about 40 sounds, but narrowed that down to 12 "I definitely need to get this!" sounds. Yeah, I was...

    editing Foley is a nightmare

Hi all I'm currently in post production for a short practice film, and I want to pay serious consideration to sound. I'm dipping my toes into the art of sound design and I have a list of all the sounds I need to Foley, from footsteps and clothing rustles to branches blowing in the wind. But I'm...

Why are zombie films still so popular?

Well, you don't need to use zombies, sure, but they do work well, for the reasons JoshL stated: inevitability of death, bringing it on ourselves and the insurmountable power of nature. Poetically tied up in a rotting corpse, which, as others have noted, provides plenty of opportunity for gore...

Why are zombie films still so popular?

Zombies are a metaphor for the villains or social ills that plague us in real life and hence are relevant to the times in which we live e.g. Dawn of the Dead is actually about mindless consumerism, 28 Days Later (although not proper zombies) is about the inevitability of nature thwarting man's...
