    Synching typing

I have a scene where the subject is typing on both a keyboard and a 10-key calculator. The rhythm is important as its the dominant interest of the scene. I'll be shooting it both wide and in a close shot. How do I record this? Adding a separate sound recording later in post couldn't possibly...

    Special Effect: Smoking Envelope

I have a scene in my film where the subject gets a piece of mail and it suddenly starts smoking. It's not on fire, but I would like the smoke to have the same density as smoke from a fire. The smoke then fills the room and the whole space is smoky. I'm thinking about using a fog machine for...

    lighting Lighting Style?

I'm shooting an apartment indoors with 16mm film, B&W. I have a lot of experience in photography so I'm good with exposure, but not too much experience setting up lights. I'm contemplating 2 different styles of light. 1) Ambient: There's one window in the room. I could expose the normal...

    What's this called

Wow, I see my comment took quite a turn, like a bunny rabbit dropped in a shark tank! I must've hit quite a nerve. My reasoning for wanting a Directors Viewfinder is that the viewfinder on the camera is limited from 20mm to 100mm, but I plan on using lenses wider than 20mm, hence the neeed for...

    cinematography Color vs. B&W

Thanks for the feedback. I figured that I might as well shoot in BW if the final result will be BW. It does have a quality which is unique. What viewfinder are you guys referring to? The one on the camera? That's just a piece of glass, or in the case of my camera (Bell and Howell 16mm), hard...

    cinematography Color vs. B&W

I'm shooting a short film on 16mm film and the final product is going to be B&W. I will be transfering the film to Mini DV for editing in Final Cut Pro. Is there an advantage to shooting in color and then converting to B&W later in editing or should one stick with B&W to begin with?

shooting-film 16 mm camera- Mount type?

I'm shooting with a 16mm Bell and Howell 240 camera, and wanted to know if I could rent lenses for it. It's pretty old, but then again theres still a lot of oldy stuff still in use in the film world. Does anybody know what kind of mount it has so I can see if any rental places carry anything...

    shooting-film Super16 film on Reg 16 camera?

Is this possible? I have an old Bell and Howell 240 which was designed to shoot regular. However, would super16 work on it? Is there some kind of adaptor?

    shooting-film Aspect Ratio (of 16mm)

It sounds like just shooting Super 16 in the first place is a good way to go. However, I already have access to an old Bell-Howell 240 that shoots on regular 16. Would Super-16 work with this as well?

    shooting-film Aspect Ratio (of 16mm)

How does one choose an aspect ratio for 16mm film? Is there only one size or does it depend on the camera? If so, what are the sizes?

    BW film: Reversal vs. Negative

Wow, those shots are really cool. But are you saying that negative would have more tonal range than these shots? Lattitude 6 for reversal vs. 11 for negative, so negative would have what, twice the range, is that how it works? The first and last shot definitely look flat, the last one...

    BW film: Reversal vs. Negative

I'm shooting a short film on 16mm BW. What is the differnce between shooting on reversal vs. negative? They cost the same with the vendors I've checked with. Is the look substantially different? Does anyone possibly have an example of stills from each for comparison..

    What's this called

I'm shooting a short film on 16mm BW film and am looking for one of those tools you use to find what focal distance you want to shoot a scene with. It's like a 'focal-finder' or something. Does any body know what they're called? Are they still in production or has digital made them obsolete...

editing Shooting film and editing digitally

I am a student filmmaker and was thinking about shooting a short film all on 16mm BW film and having all of it digitally transferred so I could edit it on Final Cut Pro later. I've never done this before and wanted to know potetntial problems, perks, etc. For a 5 minute film, how much should...

editing 16mm film stock and DV transfer

I live in LA and am looking for a reliable and affordable lab to process 16mm BW film stock as well as transfer it for digital use. I found one place, Pro 8mm Film solutions that sells, processes, and transfers 300' of film for $300. Is this good? Any advice?
