    Masks and Reactions

I used a plain white mask in my last short (in my avatar). Made the killer look more creepy since she was also wearing an "Alice in Wonderland"-style dress with long white gloves that covered her arms. You really couldn't see much of her skin, which made her more mysterious. My use of it was to...

Upgrading to an HD camera. Suggestions?

I can highly recommend the Sony HVR-Z5U. You should be able to get it for under $4K. Excellent glass, low-noise 1/3" CMOS sensors, and excellent battery life. Plus, it works great with FCP. I've shot my last 2 shorts on one, and edited both in FCP6.

    New Macbook Pros are here!

The old ones were dual-core CPUs. These are quad-cores. Clock speed isn't the only specs that determine it's speed. I really appreciate having 4 cores when running After Effects. Runs silky smooth (well, with 16GBs of RAM too). Man, I love my iMac, but having an i7 MBP sure is tempting. Must...

    Sony Z7?

I use the Z5, which has the same image sensors as the Z7, but with a fixed Zeiss zoom. Can't speak for other lens, but I get great results in low-light with the Z5's lens. It's so good, I typically set my low gain to -3db to reduce the noise even further. I'd get the largest aperture you can...

Does anyone think festivals are a racket?

I've found that even with a pro-level camera, my scripts are still terrible and I still rush production. So, shooting with a RED or ARRI camera certainly would make matters worse for me. It's a good thing too since we don't have the budget for those anyway. And since the original post...

    FPS Modes

Sounds like the same 24p mode on the Canon HV20. It's actually 24p, but wrapped in a 60i "wrapper", which is what your NLE will recognize it as. Works fine if your output is to DVD, but if making a Web version (which is progressive), you need to deinterlace it and use a 3:2 pulldown. Otherwise...

    archived-videos Haunted House Commercial

Thanks. It was a lot of fun to shoot. We just network a lot in town. Go to film fests, help with other films, attend local events, use social networks, etc. Last year, we shot a short horror film. Our make-up FX artist (who we met on the set of another film that I was a gaffer on) also does the...

Apologies for this, but I need some camera advice....again.

In regards to the iMac's Firewire, the latest iMacs have a single 9-pin Firewire 800 port. Older models had 6-pin Firewire 400 ports (some had one of each). FW800 will work with older Firewire cameras and devices, but you need the right cable. If you use a typical Firewire camera (which use the...

    archived-videos Haunted House Commercial

This was a commercial I shot for a local Halloween haunted house. It aired on the local Fox affiliate, but was then banned after a lot of complaints. My client was thrilled because that gave them a ton of attention that helped them raise even more money for the local charity they support. Gotta...

lighting what lights do you recommend me get for "house party" type video

I just shot a house party scene. Depending on how big of a scene you are lighting and how wide you plan on shooting, you could probably get by with some super-cheap work lights (about $6 apiece at Walmart) with 100w and 60w bulbs. These have clamps, so you can attach them just about anywhere...

Myths and Misinformation Perpetuated by Hollywood

I like how women let some sweaty, dirty guy who was just out cutting grass or working on a farm jump right into bed with them for some passionate scene. If I tried that, my wife would say "Eww, are you crazy?!" Guess movie characters have no sense of smell. lol

Myths and Misinformation Perpetuated by Hollywood

I hate seeing people opening their eyes underwater in the ocean, and then they act like they can see clearly for 50ft.

    Air Duct Scenes

Poseidon Adventure (1972 version) I'm sure air duct scenes are prevalent in 70s disaster movies. This is just the only one I can specifically remember the scene from though.

    cinematography D.I.Y. steady cam anyone?

I built one of those a few years ago for my HV20. I had to use a smaller weight, but it worked pretty well, even though I'm not the most graceful operator. One thing I added was some padding around the pipes. That helped to dampen a little of the shakiness in my hands. Also made it more...

Experienced Directors. Your first films. They sucked, right?

My first short was really bad. Used family and friends, thought that owning Final Cut instantly made me a good editor (it doesn't), wrote the awful script in 30 minutes, had a 8-minute film, which included 3 minutes of credits, etc. Also gave up and never even finished the ending due to some...

lighting Beginner Lighting Kit and Lighting vs Camera

If I had to start over, I'd get better lights from the start and wait on the pro camera. Even an expensive camera won't make a poorly-lit subject look good. Of course, with the proper skills, you can use $6 aluminum lights from Walmart and get great results. I still use these when I need a...

    Sony HVR-Z5U ?

I've shot my last 2 shorts with a Z5U, which was an upgrade from a Canon HV20. It has proved to be an excellent camera. Does real well in low light, though I always light everything anyway. I use a combo of ARRI 150s, some 60w aluminum scoops, plus a few inexpensive 600w Smith-Victor lamps. I...
