Why does 1AD call the roll?

It's a union rule. Director can't talk to certain labour. It bumps up their pay. Financially, it creates a job (not saying the 1st ad is not necesary). Psychologically, it allows the director to diffuse/alter being perceived as a 'general', and more as an artist.

Should I sell my 18-55mm lens?

If you are shooting with the kit lens in a dim room or without windows, you might need lights. The fstop on that kit lens is 4 or something? It's good enough for what you seem to be trying to achieve. a very rough guide for judging a lense is the f stop. The lower the number, the better ($) the...

editing PluralEyes - Syncing after edit? Any Success?

Thanks Aveek. Pluraleyes recommends syncing unedited files only. I already edited my film (well almost done), which means i have new in and outs. Plural eyes doesn't like that. They want no new in and outs to sync. I'll come by, hopefully next week. Will text ya...

    Filmmaking is too damn expensive

How low can it go? That is some interesting analysis. You think there will be a leveling off soon? How can filmmaking get any cheaper is the answer i guess. There are about 300m people in Africa who still can't afford the technology who want to make a movie. I wonder what the number of films...

can we all agree the problem with indie films is lack ofstory andwriting?

You guys are a bit off tangent. back to the original question. There is a rush to production without peer review. Send your script to 50 people and get it reviewed. Then shoot it. "Hollywood" takes a look at the cast and compares it to an expected revenue model that each country has for each...

    How do filmmakers achieve this?

It's usually the responsibility of the 2nd A.D. to sit in the set office and get your name, time in, time out. Give you your Union slips etc.

    Surviving Family $0.99 rental special

Sorry to bother you but you mind if I ask one more question. Do you have it on other websites because it's a good marketing strategy? I'm just trying understand why you would have it on multiple websites, if it's the most economical/profit driven model. Maybe it isn't?

cinevolt experience? Would you mind commenting on your experience with Cinevolt? I emailed Them and asked how do they actually generate revenue? Their response was they only charge for bandwidth. I thought this to be extremely reasonable. Do you agree? Have you had to pay for the bandwidth...

    archived-videos Got Accepted into TUFF!

TUFF is a one minute silent film festival in Toronto that plays in the subway. 1.2 million people will see it! (Well that's what they claim). Here is the (longer) 90 second version (it's a bit slower): https://vimeo.com/127897681 This is actually a snippet from my short film which is being...

    Filmmaking is too damn expensive

This depends entirely on the script. How many locations? How many actors/extras? How much CGI/SFX needed? Dogville and Burried are perfect examples of movies which CAN be shot for less than 250k. (not saying they actually were) When food is your biggest expense (other than time/effort) then you...

    Filmmaking is too damn expensive

Not applying to festivals that you won't have a chance is a good strategy. But you always have to try the top 10 or 15. If you know your niche, apply to those! BIAS alert - I run a competition specifically created to avoid the politics of judging by letting the community decide what is good and...

Really struggling with what to do with my short film?

Just my 2 cents... And I don't know if this is 'polished turd' as sweetie says...lol. Are you marketing to the big magazine's for a reason? Why are you trying to compete on that level? The ads in those mag's come from fortune 500 companies like loreal, gucci etc. You can't compete with them...
