Aloha, film student's Mom needs advice

As some of the more experienced posters have said; a film degree doesn't mean too much in the film world. It's about connections, and no sleep.

    Using film

About 95% of hollywood DPs shoot film. Its not going anywhere soon, and higher res does not equal a better picture, infact it does the opposite and makes the image look more digital and less organic.

    Lens Cleaning

Lens cleaner with a micro fiber cloth or lens tissue. Don't use water, pressured airt blower, or anything 'home made'. You most likely won't be able to get all the scratchers/dust off the lens, but most small marks can't be seen in the picture

Should I get a better camera?

To OP Even freelancing without a company, people still want the mainstream cameras.

Should I get a better camera?

Just a heads up. Most prod co. Ask for certian cameras when getting a freelancer. Mostly the better, more popular cameras like dvx, hvx, hpx, ex, etc.

Should I get a better camera?

The camera does not have interchangable lenses. You won't find a camera under $3000 with changable lenses, and even those between $3-10,000 will only have a few lenses specific to its body. You can always solve this problem with a 35mm adapter, but thats another $2,000 and even more for lenses...

Famous films from people on this site

it seems your definition of 'famous' is a bit skewed. Nationwide release on just DvD, or did it have to be in theaters?

    Video Camera Investment...

$5k for just camera? or camera and accessories? For just the camera, I'd say a used HPX170, or HVX200. $5k is enough for a HD camera, and yes, it would be a better investment. and no, it doesn't need to be shot HD to be on the big screen.

I'm buying a 16mm camera - but it needs to shoot sync sound

The 16SR is a great camera, could get a body and mag for around $3,000.

    Letus 'lag' while panning

Hey guys, I noticed a problem with the letus adapter, and have not found an answer yet. I thought it migh tjust be that one, but I AC'd for a DP who told me he's seen it on other letus'. The problem is that while panning, the image will 'lag' or 'jump' as if it was catching up to the shot...

    35mm adapter for Sony EX1 or 3

David nailed it on the EX3. Regarding the adapters; The letus is a great choice. It pre-flips the image, and only looses about a 1/2 stop of light. It is generally a bit grainy, but not too bad. The frame loss(or the amount of frame you loose from the adapters zoom to the outside of the glass)...

    Who's ready for the Oscars?

^a little one sided are we? Although it's true that there have been many selections that make most people wonder how they won, it's still not what makes the most money or what film was liked the most. Slumdog over Darkknight?

    SAG Penalties?

unless your film ends up making enough money to grab attention, then they won't get caught. I know SAG actors who do it all the time for shorts that don't get a SAG agreement.

sound Edit to Score or Score to Edit

Usually a film is scored, meaning music is composed for it, which is done after the edit. Some films will have edits to exisitng soundtracks which would be done pre edit.

    Filmmaking Vs Paying the bills

I make money in film crewing. Although I am a Director, I gained experience in another interested field of mine, assistant camera. Although this is not my career goal, I'd be happy doing it as my career, knowing directing is very difficult.

archived-videos Behind the Scenes RED Shoot

to Mike and OP: I agree with you both abot rehersals. If it's a fast shoot, then yes, some rehearsals are good, but if its a slower shoot, then rehersals would be done on set.
