What are the issues with using real weapons on set?

People have different views on firearms. I live in the "old west" where it is largely rural, and firearms have little more emotional impact than a hammer. They are merely useful tools, but they've also become useful political tools. Where you are and where I am are completely different, and if a...

    cinematography skin tone issues

Hi guys, I have an issue with shooting skin tones that are extremely red (in this case a dark native american). I can't seem to grade the image where the skin tones look reasonable. I believe I was using halogens, although there was a little bit of mixed fluorescents which I tried to overpower...

    The Scorpion Light, Opinions?

It does look pretty good! The issue I have is I can't justify the price to my brain. At about US$175 each, I could buy a dozen LED flashlights for just the cost of one head. This isn't to say it doesn't look like a great product... it's just that it's difficult to convince my brain it's worth...

What are the issues with using real weapons on set?

Actually, it's because I have access to many weapons. Using real weapons would save me money. :) But honestly, investing in some good airsoft replicas and some hard rubber pistols might not be a bad idea for this and future films. I can always have an ECU sliding across a real weapon in a...

    cinematography Question about pulling focus.

I use a 7" tablet with DSLRcontroller installed used as an external monitor. You don't get peaking, but you do get an inexpensive monitor with very good resolution.

What are the issues with using real weapons on set?

I think that might've been responding to cryogenic's post from tx about giving the left more ammo. I'm not worried about politics and it should simply be ignored in this thread. I'm interested in safety, and I believe everyone here is, too. An excellent point was raised about difficulty getting...

What are the issues with using real weapons on set?

I will assume all responses come with the "I'm not responsible for your idiocy or accidents, and I don't advocate weapons on set" disclaimer. I would certainly rather use action replica guns, but those replicas are not that cheap (and the ones that are cheap, look cheap). I realize that things...

I'm shooting a music video for a band for the first time, any tips?

Whoa... does a 1hr CD really take 6 months of work for the final processing and mixing? If that's not an exaggeration, yowch.

    Ring light...???

I know someone who has a 6 foot ringlight made that way. When making one, you need to watch the amperage. Some people use CFLs for the energy saving, but I despise those for photography.

    Ring light...???

$200 for this one, but it's much smaller. That is not a good thing except for portability. It's balanced to 5600K, which is a good thing over fluorescent (although that one appeared to be balanced, I've seen issues with color casts even on balanced fluorescents)...

    Ring light...???

I'm sure you can get an LED version for much more money if you need foldability. That $150 is a pretty good price.

    NTG-2 and what recorder?

I will note the DR60 is still on sale for $200, which is a great price. I mean, really great price. I had a bad experience with the DR40 and had to return it, replaced with a zoom H6 which I really like. The DR60 was my next choice, and would've been my first choice if it was this cheap earlier...

    The Scorpion Light, Opinions?

there may be mixing of light. is a kelvin rating given, along with any tint deviation so we could know how it will mix with, say, tungstens or hids?

I'm shooting a music video for a band for the first time, any tips?

Hope you like the song. You'll probably have an ear worm for a week. I've shot 2 or 3 music vids, and must've heard each song 50-100 times.

    cinematography Why (Not) Go Hand-Held?

hah, it was good. I chuckled. The handheld movement helped capture the awkwardness of a family dinner. There was clearly a reason for it. I also liked the foreground elements intentionally framed to interrupt the shot. The sound, with background conversations and lots of secret looks and such...

    from shorts to features

Right. Don't extend a good 6 minute short into a dragging 10 minute short. ... or worse, a 6 minute short with 4 minutes of credits :)

    Short film completion time

It can be done if you can manage time and keep to a schedule. You need a good producer to do something like this that fast.

    from shorts to features

10-15 minutes, generally. I know that sounds odd to get an actual number since "short" is basically anything under 45 minutes. But more than 15 min or so, the story will really demand it be that length. If your story can be told in under that time, do it. Some documentaries are different, but...

My (ahem) version of The Empire Strikes Back.

I did get pulled into it and I poked at the TEA party. I apologize and will make no further posts which imply or push any agenda (although I don't consider discussions of "what is anarchy" or "Is Darth Vader a democrat or republican" to be a political discussion per se). It is true that many...

My (ahem) version of The Empire Strikes Back.

I don't think you know what anarchy means in terms of a government system. It's a complete decentralization, but that always results in many smaller organizations governing themselves. The moment two+ people get together, there is a small form of government, even if the prevailing government is...
