    Stabilizers vs Shoulder Rigs

A shoulder rig is considered a type of stabilizer, as is a tripod, as is a steadycam. What are you asking about? Lighting a scene is rarely done on-camera. Shoulder rigs with lights or mics are usually for ENG, not for film... film lights the set independent of the camera. You don't get great...

sound Worked boom for first time

Recovering from yesterday's shoot, but I'm not too beat up. It's fairly demanding work, physically and mentally. After a little bit of inquiry after the shoot, the previous substitute boom op was fired for ruining a shot which couldn't be recreated since the set was wrapped. When I arrived, the...

Hrm... No. Time to test my google fu.

sound Worked boom for first time

Well, that was cool. Got some paid gigs just from that 48hfp. Apparently, there aren't a ton of boom ops?

sound Worked boom for first time

Nope... But what I didn't expect was learning some of the cool subtleties. This is a lot more subtle than I thought. You and the mixer are doing the equivalent job of DP and camera op, but usually doing it with little setup. Sound shaping for the room is like lighting, but every set has...

sound Worked boom for first time

I've always respected sound, but damn it can be physically taxing! I've done boom as far as setting up a mic stand and occasionally instructing someone to hold the mic in a place as I adjusted levels. But I just boomed a short for 12 hours and holy crap I'm beat.

    Beginner, what camera/lenses software etc

Bleah... I really don't like the 18-135 lens. I have V1, and it is just too soft. I hear the stm version is a little better, but I am suspicious. Instead, I would highly recommend the EF-S 15-85. It's a perfect range for film, although it's not a constant aperture. I use the ef-s 17-55 2.8...

    Beginner, what camera/lenses software etc

A 5d3 is fine for most things, although focus pulling is more difficult on the larger sensors. You can get by with inexpensive vintage lenses, especially old nikon lenses with adapters. This should be your first concern, long before you jump into buying gear. Learn first. Use something really...

does anyone know what these white dots are that appear on my video?

I haven't seen the effects of fungus, and I would guess that is dust on the front of the lens, and the lens is getting hit by stray light (like a reflector on camera right). Living in the desert, we simply don't have to worry about fungus, but we do have to worry about dust... a lot. It is...

What advice would you give someone planning to shoot a short scene in 1.5 months?

You will want a film release signed by both 14 yo actor and a parent. As far as falling, no idea. Often you can do something from angles that make it clear what happened, but hide the lack of impact.

What advice would you give someone planning to shoot a short scene in 1.5 months?

I would focus on a lot of the areas you aren't thinking about. Do you have power? A generator? You going to have the lighting guy do the fog machine? Obviously, it starts with a script. A good script. Make that, then revise it until you're really happy. Then bounce the script off a director...

How Much Money Do I Need To Set Aside?

You need to learn to never do that. Nobody will lend you equipment, and rental houses will be happy to sell you stuff you break. Breaking stuff is a learned habit (and I'm not sure if you used that word on purpose). You need to relearn how to handle, store, and operate gear.

How Much Money Do I Need To Set Aside?

I'm pretty sure he wishes he has 15 large for the film, but it's only 1500. My advice is to find a good producer, a friend who has a knack for interacting with people and getting things done, and is excited about this project. This person will save you money.

What are your favorite lense manufactures?

I didn't know you could fit Leica lenses on a BM4k. I like canon lenses, but I've recently been enjoying vintage lenses quite a lot.

Interesting (and scary) comparison of 5d3 to a cellphone cam

This is a comparison of the 5d3 IQ to a samsung note 3, which is now packing a 4k camera. I'll preface this with the obvious: yeah I know about sensor sizes and all the advantages/disadvantages of a DSLR. I've shot on one a lot, and am not going to be confused. But in a situation where the...

    Need ideas for more lenses!

Aye, and it will retain its value. If you do not have a PLANNED intention to upgrade to full frame, do not even consider the EF vs EF-S issue. In other words, if you can't say exactly what day you are going to buy a 5d3, just buy lenses for your current camera. There's no good reason not to...

    Field Monitor Question... need help

I had been looking into do a hud-mount using bluetooth, but didn't get very far since the tech for HUDs was pretty poor at the time. It might be closer in realizing it, using google glass, as that runs android and could theoretically run DSLRcontroller. The battery life would have to be...
