Take boring(but well paid) job or keep on applying for more 'film' related ones?

Seriously. How is this even more than a passing, unspoken question? A job in the field will give you insights you have utterly no clues about right now. The less you know, the more you think you know. Philosophized for years, it's been proven that people overestimate their abilities based...

Help! DR-40 Hiss with External only/internal fine

Tascam just announced the 70D, which addresses some of the issues I had with the 60D. 4 XLRs, 2 built-in omnis, and camera passthrough for sync. Sounds pretty nice if you ask me, especially if the batteries last longer, and assuming all the "good" was kept from the 60D. I cannot tell if they...

Help! DR-40 Hiss with External only/internal fine

Check XLR input #2 for the same hiss. If it's not there, check input #1 for debris. Maybe blow it out with some canned air (although be careful -- if there is debris, you don't want to blow it into the case). The H4n has a pretty crappy interface, but I'm really liking the Zoom H6. It has good...

    Zoom h4N mother fcucker batteries!?

To help with my organizing, I bought 4 packs of these, and grouped by color: And I have a bunch of the standard boring colors, which I marked on the tops with specific patterns to quickly identify which group they're in.

    Zoom h4N mother fcucker batteries!?

You do have to make sure you have a method to charge if you're going to be gone close to the usage limit, but two things: You should keep emergency batteries available (like lithiums), and eneloops do not need to be charged the night before a shoot. You can charge them a month before and they'll...

7D for paid work or upgrade to F3

I've shot movies with the 7D and the 5D3, and I've only had the 5D3 shut down due to heat. 7D does pretty well. Of course, the images are better with the 5D3. That said, the form factor and ergonomics of the sony movie cameras makes them much better for full-time movie making, especially run &...

Power source- extra batteries or something else?

A car inverter (12vdc to 120vac) for your chargers is useful (assuming you drive there). From my experience, an inverter charges batteries just fine on every charger I've tested. But don't leave it charging in a closed car. Sunlight and interior heat while recharging can start a fire inside cars.

    Blowing Stuff Up

I think what scoopicman was saying is that what you think you want and what you really want might differ a lot. Pyrotechnics on a model gives you one shot, and it needs to look good, but pyrotechnics on a small model tends to look like a small model just got blown up (due to the size of the...

    Main actor arrested

In the ad, you should say "You have to look exactly like this guy" and post his mugshot. :D Who knows, maybe you'll get a perfect look alike. On a more serious note, if you find you can go the job route and do it, he has to actually be "working" there. As in, if he doesn't show up or disappears...

    lighting polarizer with three-point lighting?

Yeah, that sounds like how I use it for still photography of things like oil paintings, where you don't want the spectrals obscuring the colors but still need to capture the texture. But a bunch of reflective surfaces, unless they're mostly parallel like windows, will give off different angles...

Ah, okay, you should be good.

    lighting need light socket advice

I'm saying don't mix up the neutral and the hot. If you do, you run the risk of energizing the outside instead of that little tab inside the socket, and touching the outside while grounded can zap you in a most unpleasant way. It technically *shouldn't* zap you, but failures happen, and in case...

    lighting need light socket advice

The dangling light holders are cheap to make. I make my own electric stuff all the time. However, you should know about polarity and grounding, and buy and install the plugs appropriately. Last thing you want is to get the hell shocked out of you or someone else. It can happen pretty easily if...

Camera Aiming and Object Tracking Module

Cool stuff. Adding it to a gimbal on a copter could definitely be useful, because it's pretty hard to control everything at once.

What could I of done different on this video??

I love the dark scenes in the first half, but they need a lighted focal point to make the dark feel like it's more than just underexposure. Something to break up the frame, like a lone light or foreground element would work great. It's clear that it was normally lit, and the exposure just...

Advice on recorder to use with Sound Devices 302

off-topic a bit: I'm not talented, afaik, yet. But I keep getting called to boom. Subbed for a feature, and have 2 shorts lined up. I'm pretty sure the "show up when you agree to show up" is 75% of the equation. When people know they can count on you, it's amazing how many paid calls you start...

A7S and GH4 - what are your thoughts on them?

Not really... you can't get rid of color moire without a different kind of filter in the front, or layout of the pixels. But it's better than it used to be.

Is It a Safe Bet to Buy a Used DSLR or Mirrorless/Hybrid-something for Video?

Naw, you can clean a sensor. You just have to use something for the purpose. A qtip won't work well and will leave horrible streaks, usually. You can get these flat, sensor-sized pads and wet cleaner for them for about $15. Works great when gunk gets on it. Just one swipe across it does a great...

Is It a Safe Bet to Buy a Used DSLR or Mirrorless/Hybrid-something for Video?

I have no problem buying used. Just remember, the outside of the camera represents the treatment and will reflect the innards. Yes, you will absolutely notice sensor dust on a video. You'll notice dead pixels. There are some ways around this, but dust happens and isn't always the fault of the...

    Do lens converters degrade quality?

Ah, right, that makes sense since that's essentially what the anti-aliasing does by the camera. The old MF lenses have a bit worse contrast than my modern lenses, but also have very little dropoff on the edges, so it would make sense that they would also display less moire and have a nice, even...
