Official Canon batteries vs third party alternatives

Interesting feedback. I have to say I feel at this point I wouldn't get the necessary benefit from a battery grip, especially as I feel, like Gonzo, I can easily cycle between batteries. I think for now I'm just going to go for a couple of third party batteries. Thanks for the advice guys :)

Official Canon batteries vs third party alternatives

I'm looking into buying a couple more batteries for my 600D. I don't think I'd need many as I'm not doing tons of continuous recording, but one or two might be necessary. What do people think about paying full price for Canon quality vs buying potentially inferior batteries for cheaper? Do the...

Can you tell me if this would work as a short?!

I like it as a concept, I think it would need some tight editing and you may well have to compromise by not using every shot you might like, but I think it is definitely doable. Nate's music vid tip is a good one, I'd definitely do that. Also, how much dialogue were you planning on? A...

archived-videos Trailer for 'Sailing With Aquaphobia' ! - feedback appreciated!

I'll say the same as everyone else, the audio of the music did take over from the narration at one point. However, I did think it looked very interesting and I do look forward to seeing the final result! One question I have, how did you find the audio with that setup (assuming you have...

movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

Great film! Guessing from your username you're a fan of Ryan Gosling? Personally, I can't wait for Drive! In response to the 'Sucker Punch' debate, I haven't watched it but I'm hoping to soon now it's on DVD. I don't really know what to expect, so I'll be curious to see how it turns out. Maybe...

Best materials or methods for making prop guns?

I realise a few have been posted but this shows a really straightforward way to turn a standard water gun into a gun. The main issue I suppose would be getting a water gun that looks enough like a real gun. As others have said if airsoft guns are banned in Australia, definitely check about...

    editing Editing on a laptop?

The key thing is the laptop in question, for sure. I have Adobe Premiere, but I couldn't install CS5.5 as I only have 32-bit windows as opposed to 64-bit, so I use the previous version. Make sure to check specs of the editing software you're looking into, and if you do buy a new laptop for...

Anyone read any indie film magazines?

Oh yeah, obviously something like AC isn't going to be focussed on more indie issues, but I'm interested in general filmmaking info as well so it looks like a nice magazine. In the same way I've got cinematography books as well as stuff like the Guerilla Filmmakers series. I'll definitely look...

17 year old directs $2.7 million grossing film

I would imagine just like there are many examples of very poor films being made by people of all ages, there are also a huge number of poor films made by 16 or 17 year olds. Admittedly, I can't imagine many of them got nearly half a million in funding (not why Rich succeeded, just saying it...

Anyone read any indie film magazines?

SinEater, American Cinematographer looks like an interesting read, their online store is closed now but I'll take a look when it reopens. Indie Slate is a bit harder to gauge from their website, find it a good read? I think there's no doubt about that. In the same way you could argue you no...

movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

Sounds like a really interesting film, might have to check that one out. I watched a bunch of films recently, with Rise of the Planet of the Apes being surprisingly good (I was predicting it to be a flop), although the ending did annoy me somewhat. I'd give it a 7, pushing for an 8. Captain...

Anyone read any indie film magazines?

Title says it all really, does anyone read any magazines on indie film or film making? I don't know what it is, but even in this digital age we live in I still really enjoy reading a good magazine, and I often try and pick up a copy of Total Film or Empire. So, I thought it might be fun to see...

    Anybody interested in participating?

Thanks for the heads up, I think this looks like a pretty interesting competition. Think this could be the first thing I start shooting :) I'd like to think 'peers' consists of select representatives from the animal kingdom critiquing each video :weird:

    Aye up

Welcome! I'm not too far away in the Northwest, so looks like there's a pretty strong UK presence here :)

archived-videos I'd love to get feedback on my film

Honestly just a bit wooden, and the man did ham it up a bit at times. I've definitely seen worse, but it did somewhat pull me out of the experience though.

    Filmmaking: Hobby, job, or both.

An interest and a passion but definitely a hobby for now. I'm only really taking my first steps into actually turning my dreams of filmmaking into realities (first cameras in the post right now :) ) Hopefully one day I can turn it into my day job, make it in the industry and fulfil all those...

archived-videos I'd love to get feedback on my film

I really liked the atmosphere you created, although I'll agree I think the performances from the actors could have been better. But the cinematography was really good, and overall I was impressed with the whole thing, nice one :)

archived-videos [Trailer] Crowdfunded Superhero Feature Avery and Pete

I thought that was excellent, genuinely one of the best indie trailers I've seen. I can actually imagine seeing that trailer in the cinema before the main feature, and to be honest I'd probably say to whoever I'm with that it looks great and we should go see it! I realise you've heard a lot of...

    lighting Lighting explained?

I've seen a lot of talk about this as well, and I am definitely considering it. Thinking about it, it isn't particularly more expensive than a couple of books on the subject, and probably infinitely more useful. I'm still jobhunting at the moment, but if I do manage to get more money on my side...

    lighting Lighting explained?

Ah thats a shame, I wouldn't have minded reading it! I've heard that this book is very good on the subject if you're looking to invest in a fulltime reference. I'm considering it, as I've heard many experienced indie filmmakers say they enjoy having a copy on set at all times for reference-...
