New Toy (Glidecam) - first impressions

I'd also be interested in your progress with this piece of kit, as I am thinking of hiring one for a few shots. Steven

    lighting Lighting alternatives

I have also had good results with 500watt Halogen Work Flood Lights, using simple relfectors and diffusers. Just remember that they get very hot and could easily cause a fire. I'm going to buy some dimmer 'plugs' which will give me a little more control over the light.

Cheers DirectorX, that's a good place to start. Back to laboratory to experiment. Steven

    Ligthing DV

Hello, time to show how little I know. I've been experimenting with shooting on a Canon XM1 MiniDV camera. I've been extremely impressed with the outdoors results. I even shot a sunrise which came out superbly, without any grainyness (if such a word exists). The dark areas came out fine and...

"Dark Star" 1974 classic college cult film.

Darkstar is one of my favourites, I bought it on DVD about a year ago and have been using it to show people involved in my film what can be done with little money. I particularly liked Pinback's Video Diaries. And the idea that the alien mascot could form the basis for the script of Ridley...

Mac or PC question soon to be redundent?

I don't have a link for the Steve Jobs 'quote', but here is a link to another interesting article on the subject: http://www.apcmag.com/apc/v3.nsf/0/64E7EA353646669ECA2570F50012430B Steven.

Mac or PC question soon to be redundent?

I got this info from a friend of a friend, so I'm NOT betting my life on it. (I've only just re-read this and added the 'NOT')

Mac or PC question soon to be redundent?

A quick update on this subject. Apparently, Steve Jobs (Mr Apple) says that you WILL be able to run whatever you want on the new Intel Mac. It just won't work the other way around i.e. you won't be able to run OSX on a P.C. (or at least they'll try to stop you). It may not be straight forward...

    UK Equipment Hire?

Can anyone recommend some companies for equipment hire in the UK? - I'm looking for Tripods, Panning Heads and Camera Stabalisation mainly. - 'Up North' would be ideal. - Indie friendly. - A good website would also help. Steven

How much do the UK police charge to attend a location?

Cheers again Clive, I should probably just send my questions directly to you. I don't think I'll need an amourer as the 'Rayguns' don't function in any way what-so-ever and there is no 'gun play' they are just carried. I will definitely take your advice about 'confiscating' the weapons...

How much do the UK police charge to attend a location?

Hello, I am organising locations for my short film. It is set on the Moors of the UK, well away from the general public, apart from ramblers. The characters will be carrying mock 'weapons', these will not be imitation or even realistic in any way. They will be for want of a better word...

    SHOT LISTS - important organization

Sonnyboo, excellent tip subject. I have just finished the script for my not so short, short and have begun puting my shot list together. I am storyboarding as well, but still think a shot list is a good idea, especially when using none professional crew and actors. You've got to have a plan, it...

Mac or PC question soon to be redundent?

I agree. I've been caught out (or rather the companies I've worked for have) by first generation technology before. I work on a new G5 at work and it's pretty good. I don't like all the bells and whistles they've put OSX (I've only just made the change from the old system). I'm still tempted...

Mac or PC question soon to be redundent?

You've probably already heard about this, but I've been away from the forum for a bit I couldn't see if this had mentioned. If you are thinking of getting a new machine in the near future (especially a Mac) you may wish to wait. I was going to buy a new Mac, but a PC guy I know said I should...

    Portable, Battery Powered, Display?

Just an update on this question. I finally bought a 8 inch LCD display from Maplin.co.uk the colour balance isn't great but for framing it's just fine £149.99. My camera plugs in okay and I picked up a couple of 'Rechargeable Emergency Jumpstart and 12V Power Supplies' £39.99 each, which means...

As anyone got anything on the 'Internet Movie Database'?

That's strange clive, is the film BBFC classified? I mentioned earlier in this thread, that I was told by IMDB, that a BBFC classification, meant it would be listed? Steven

As anyone got anything on the 'Internet Movie Database'?

I've been told that if I have the film BBFC classified (which I was planning on doing anyway) it will be eligable. Steven

Thanks Knightly, now that I know it's called a 'Field Monitor' it will make my search a lot easier. Cheers, Steven

    Portable, Battery Powered, Display?

Hello, I am getting together my equipment list for a location shoot on the Moors of Northern England. One piece of kit that I would find useful is a battery powered display to plug into my MiniDV camera. - I just need something to impove on the camera's viewer. - I will be far from the nearest...
