    Writer/Director Reps?

Does anyone know of a good management company or agency (probably in Los Angeles) for writers and directors? I know of all the big companies, but who are the smaller ones that might be looking for up-and-coming talent? I was hoping some reps would seek me out after my festival run this year...

Important question! Can you send your film into festival review with any music ?

Sure you can send a screener in with unlicensed music, but you can't play at the festival unless you've asked the bands and/or secured the licensing. However, many films break this rule. I broke it and now I actually regret it because now that the festival run is over, in order to release my...

    Vimeo Song Copyright

Has anyone encountered trouble uploading to Vimeo with popular music? Can you walk me through the process? My situation: I'm about to release a feature film for free on Vimeo Plus (Not Vimeo Pro On Demand). I have secured all the licensing for the music in my film, but there are a couple of...

    Budget Breakdown

I've seen plenty of budget threads, but I haven't seen what I'm looking for. Anyone have access to an indie budget breakdown in the 75k-200k range? The film should be relatively recent, maybe it played at Sundance in the last 4 or 5 years. Definitely shot digitally. I have made my own budgets...

Where do I sign on this contract?

I do not speak legalese... Where do I sign? Why are there multiple spaces to sign? What is my title? Etc... [link removed] ----------- Nevermind, I figured it out!

    Figuring out a budget

Based on the kind of questions you are asking (which is understandable since its your first film) you definitely need a good producer. He/she will already know the answers to these questions and will have the resources and contacts to help you get it made. By the way, not to be too...

    Figuring out a budget

with $250,000 you can afford an actual crew and you will save your self headache and stress. Good feature films can be made nowadays for $10,000 - $30,000. I did it this way with the skeleton crew you described, and it was too much work for me.

    New film distribution company

Couple of questions... -Is there any guarantee like "if your film doesn't get into any of the outlets you get your money back"? -Aren't there already other companies that offer this same service but don't take royalties? -Are the distribution rights exclusive to you in any of these areas?

    Music Licencing

I've been dealing with music publishing rights for the last few months and here are the general numbers: Indie bands who are unsigned have mostly given me rights gratis. Bands signed to small indie labels have given me rights for about $200-$500. Artists on major record labels have quoted me at...

cinematography Shaky versus Still Cameras - Observations From IFFB

Your example in Beneath The Harvest Sky does not bother me at all. That's not intentional shake, that's just what is looks like when you use a camera with a handheld rig. I agree that purposeful camera shake is annoying. Also, camera jitter is really bad too, which is what you get when your...

What movies were filmed with Blackmagic cameras?

In general you get what you pay for. BMC looks great, especially if you're shooting RAW, but the other cameras you listed cost much more money and will have better image quality. Just use the best camera you can afford on your budget.

    Making a Film Alone

I appreciate the FB page support. We're just starting our festival run this month, so I imagine we'll release online later this year.. unless a distribution company makes me an offer I can't refuse, then the release date might be in their hands :)

    Making a Film Alone

Well thank you! There's a pretty in depth interview I did a while ago here: https://lightsfilmschool.com/blog/how-i-made-my-first-feature-film/2654/ But I can sum it up basically by saying... -I wrote the script knowing I'd have very little money (choosing locations wisely, and writing...

    Making a Film Alone

I came as close as I could possibly come to making a feature alone. I did all the pre-production and post-production myself, but realistically it is basically impossible to work alone on shoot days. Most days I had 2 or 3 people helping, plus the actors. I do not recommend doing it this way...

    Pleased To Announce

"EVER" has been selected to world premier at the Newport Beach Film Festival in April. It's been a long road making my first feature film, and I can honestly say it wouldn't have been possible without help from this forum. Thank you all! EDIT: Official Trailer --...

Scene location - near one's house - how to write them?

You CAN be very general if it's understood which house it is, for instance if the characters were just inside a specific house, then they go outside to the porch, you can just write EXT. HOUSE - CONTINUOUS But since it looks like your characters are walking toward the house and it's a long...

    Five most unusual questions...

Writers go to the same parties, premiers, and industry events that actors and everyone else in the industry goes to, so there's tons of opportunity for romantic relationships. Good question. Just throwing this out there, I was working as a photo retoucher on set at one of her shoots and I saw...
