    Q&A advice?

Thanks for the advice, I do have a Q&A coming up, but for the record my examples were hypothetical. We all had a good time on set, everything went great! :)

    Q&A advice?

Has anyone ever done a Q&A, and do you have any advice? One thing specifically I'm wondering is: When answering questions is it more important to be honest, or to sugar coat things? One example might be that your entire shoot was chaos and everything went wrong and nobody got along on set...

    Five most unusual questions...

There are a lot of similarities in the music industry and film industry, so maybe this helps on your first question. My friend wrote a song and released it on and indie music blog site under a random band name, with no other information, kept it mysterious. The song caught pretty big in the...

    Interesting Points

Film festival advice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5728B-3ff4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5728B-3ff4 Edit: I also should add that I highly recommend this youtube channel. She interviews TONS of filmmakers, writers, actors, and many of them are indie success stories. More videos added...

    editing Editing platform of choice?

Now that I'm done with my feature (which I edited on FCP 7) I'm in the market to either upgrade to FCPX or maybe a different program

Aiming for Sundance... Need to upgrade gear

Fair enough :) Actually, to be honest, I'm not a gear nut at all. Constantly trying to learn new technology is so exhausting. I wanted to shoot my feature with my 60D, but my cinematographer showed me some BMC test footage before it was released, and I was sold. It was the first time I realized...

Aiming for Sundance... Need to upgrade gear

I don't really know what you're trying to say here, but I feel like it might be aimed at me. Are you saying people who would prefer to use nicer gear are less likely to make it as a filmmaker? That doesn't make any sense to me. Talent, hard work, and luck are the determining factors for...

    cinematography Changing aspect ratio mid-film

My feature has something kind of like this... The film starts out with some "home footage" shots that are in 16:9, but shrunken down smaller so they don't fill the whole screen, then it snaps into the full 16:9 frame once the home footage is over and the real movie begins.

    Grants for Film Projects

I don't know any off the top of my head besides Creative District. The problem is grants for short films are very rare since most filmmakers can and should fund their own shorts.

Aiming for Sundance... Need to upgrade gear

Out of the cameras he listed, the pocket cam, but if he can get a bigger budget or hire an experienced cinematographer, go with RED or Alexa. I thought I made that clear already :P

Aiming for Sundance... Need to upgrade gear

I would also like to add to this thread that when someone asks a question about gear, it is wrong to automatically assume they are not already working on their craft and already don't have the most amazing script in the world. Just because the OP says they are an "amateur filmmaker" doesn't...

Aiming for Sundance... Need to upgrade gear

All fair points, Jax, but I don't think we're even arguing all that much since we're agreeing on pretty much everything. I just wanted to stress to the OP that better gear CAN make a difference (in the right hands) and I wanted to give him/her some advice that wasn't the standard "work on your...

Aiming for Sundance... Need to upgrade gear

Well the clips in those high budget films that were shot with 5Ds don't look as good as the rest of the movie. They are only shown for a fraction of a second so the audience doesn't notice. If all that mattered was that your team be experienced, why are these big budget films using...

Aiming for Sundance... Need to upgrade gear

Ignore any negative comments. I'm going to assume you're not an idiot and you're well aware that telling a good story is important. And you also know that gear alone is not going to make a good film and Sundance in not the end all be all of filmmaking blah blah blah. Here's my opinion. Gear IS...

Where did you start as a filmmaker?

I learned about the industry by working as an extra on set. I learned my technical skills from doing photography, writing, recording music, and by shooting bands live in the studio and then editing the footage. Then I went straight to feature films.

Can women really "make it" as directors?

Some of you should re-read cheeseandachallenge's response: Jobs like engineering, programming, military, or filmmaking only SEEM less appealing to women because society tells them those jobs are for men. If we suddenly had to rebuild society without memories of how things used to be, we'd...

Can women really "make it" as directors?

The truth is, yes it is (still) harder for women to make it, but the good news is it's a hot button issue in the indie film world and every major festival is pushing for more women on screen and behind the camera. I think for Sundance this year, something like 7 out of 11 of the directors in...

cinematography Question about using 'picture styles'.

This shows that you don't understand the REASON for shooting a flat image. If you want the best image you can get out of your camera, you should NEVER be using any of those in-camera picture styles. Always shoot as flat as possible to get the most to work with later. If you're not able to get a...

If someone associated with your film uses illegal software..

Festivals / distributors don't care how you made the film, only that the film is good. That's why you sign liability contracts and buy E&O insurance. If the government audited you as a filmmaker I'd imagine you would just be showing them invoices from the people you hired to do the post. The...
