That was pretty groovy. Very nice cinematography and lighting. The only thing I didn't care for was the performance of the VO.

If you're shooting an 'art house' or 'experimental' then you don't need a story, but if you want any kind of 'narrative' going on...you need a story.

I think your order is fine...you can never have too much preproduction. The only thing I would say (my opinion) is don't go crazy with story boards. And don't waste a lot of time 'shooting' locations for story boards. If you really need the actual location for reference, take stills...that...

I wonder how much more time it would take, and how much more money it would cost to actually light this and record good audio and mix it? I don't mind micro budget productions...in fact I yearn to find micro budget production who use ingenuity, skill, and sweat equity to bring a production up...

Ya, the DP went for the yellow for early morning colors...the sun streaming in and such. Also at sunset when the girl is dancing...it's a strong choice, but I like it. (Ridley Scott will do this as well). My brother also uses this style...check out this example from his recent grad thesis...

I think that was pretty well done. It was cute, and I like the shot composition and editing. I think there could have been a LOT more TLC with the lighting and audio design. Kudos.

As already said, you can get a solid actor for free. If you don't have the money to pay, be upfront about this, and of course just because you're budget is micro doesn't mean you should skimp on casting--remember, 90% of directing is casting. If you have a budget to pay an actor, I would say...

Yes, it's wrong. Give them the DVD of the production, and let them do it themselves. Now, if you want to cut them a full reel (with other media) then charge them. But just for scenes from your production...lol...no way.
