    Practice makes perfect

The schedule for practice time should be "whenever you can." Spend your available free time setting up lighting scenarios and playing around. If it helps, you can do what I did to test my 7D and just write a short little script, no more than a couple of pages, and shoot it.

lighting Lighting car interior at night?

I would recommend these also as a great low-budget solution (provided you have a camera that will work well in relatively low light). Heck, I've plugged in a desk lamp into the car charger before and that worked. ;)

I've got a new project online: http://vimeo.com/8145618 It's a short film we did as a test for our new Canon 7D.

editing dropped frames in final cut pro 6

I find that the bottleneck in these situations is usually the hard drive speed. What is the data rate/resolution/codec of your footage?

    editing Mixing 4:3 and 16:9

I would crop the 4x3 footage to match the anamorphic. Even though it's SD, it should hold up well enough, especially with the kind of color grading you're describing. As for the transcoding, I don't think it's going to give you very much. Do a test to be sure, but I doubt it will be worth the...

Movies featuring character(s) based on real life people

Almost every character I write is based off someone in reality. Just avoid really obvious parallels and change their names and you should be okay. If you have any doubts once the script is done, then consult a lawyer.

    Something about Post-Production

What I mean is making sure you have detail in shadows and aren't clipping the highlights. The goal is to preserve as much information as possible before going into post so that you have more to work with. Ratios between key light and fill is also an art form, and depends greatly on the look...

    Something about Post-Production

Not really, although color grading can correct overall color temp of the lights to an extent. What you need are good exposure (being mindful of highlights and shadows), good lighting ratios, and shooting with the right color balance all help to get a good grading session in post.

best new camera for low budget production?

No, none of that is true. What you're probably thinking of is the so-called jellocam distortion that comes from rolling shutters. But this is an artifact of all CMOS cameras, including the Red. It's mostly noticeable on fast pans and quick vertical movements and affects vertical shapes like...

best new camera for low budget production?

This is simply not true about the 7D. The image is no more stylized than what comes out of any digital camera or camcorder.

    Canon EOS 5D Mark II

There are settings that allow you to shoot essentially a flat curve for more details in shadows and highlights. The general exposure range for the camera is around 8 stops. Also, you can turn the sharpness completely down and adjust the saturation (which you have to do when you flatten the...

    Canon EOS 5D Mark II

None of those would be the camera itself, but rather the choices made by the shooter.

best new camera for low budget production?

Just got a 7D, which I love. Great quality image for relatively little money. Good for narrative productions. NOT RECOMMENDED for event photography, however. But for distributable narrative films on a low budget, a viable option. Btw, I sold an SD feature last spring shot on the DVX100a for...

    Canon EOS 5D Mark II

I have a 7D and I couldn't be happier. It replaces my workhorse DVX100a for narrative filmmaking. Just shot a short film this weekend that I hope to get online by early next week.
