    The Woes of Finding Investors.

I raised some money for a feature in the early 1990's. It was all from friends and family of the cast and crew. Investing in a film is not really a smart business decision in most case (there are exceptions) People usually put money into a project to support the people involved and the project...

CONAN's editors move to Adobe from Final Cut

I used Premiere CS4. It was great but it crashed a lot. I solved the problem by force quitting all my running programs before an export. However, I can export in FCE with a bunch of stuff running. Love AE and Sound booth though.

Isn' this Escape from New York, in space?

Gotta love the "let's send in ONE man" strategy! Why do they have Seal TEAMS??? And make sure it's a guy you can't trust, who is a reluctant hero. Make perfect sense!

Thinking about turning down studio distribution deal...

I'm just curious because I didn't read the entire thread…does anyone really know if this "deal" ever really existed? Or was it a ruse to draw attention to a movie?

    I Could Use Some Eyes...

I read the first few pages. Good style. A lot better then most. I like the "next time you mug someone, make sure it's not me" line that's clever. One quick format thingy -> you described the Sebastian character on the first page then AGAIN on page 3. There's no reason to describe a character...

    Today's Shoot

I recorded sound for a film in Long Beach, CA where the director informed the Police a few days ago he would be doing a shoot out scene with blanks. The Problem was the OTHER SHIFT didn't tell the Officers on duty that day. An army of Police showed up aiming shotguns and assault rifles. Lesson...

Location - Derelict Building / Rooftop

I had a rooftop scene in my movie. I looked all over LA. Everyone wanted a fortune to shoot on the roof and pay a security guard to be there as well. (Big Surprise huh!) One of our crew people donated their rooftop. In my experience asking people involved in the project if they have access to a...

Food for the cast and crew

Three words… Get a coffeemaker!!! I learned the hard way your cast and crew will be begging for Starbucks/Tea Leaf/Peets if you don't and that will add up. 8-)

    "Casting fee" via talent agency:

We used a number of different casting websites to cast our production. Ironically all the submissions from an "agency" were a bad fit and not used. We also used craigslist ("gigs" Section for free in LA). Also, a really cool owner of a casting website let us use his office for auditions totally...

    Opinions Please: California or Florida?

We filmed on a street in West LA. It turned out okay. I was expecting a disaster really. It's easier to go up to an area like Santa Clarita with less traffic though.

Do I really need a Producer?

I agree with everyone else. Drop your current producer. Also, as already stated you may want to be your own producer if you are financing your production. A friend who works for free can end up costing you more money that not having them if they mess up the scheduling and the shoot is extended...

    Opinions Please: California or Florida?

Here's an advantage to Florida -> No state income tax. http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/incometaxandtheirs/a/nostatetax.htm Also, I believe you can get around unions for indie filming.

Is it true that the market does not like controversial films?

    I'd say… Brothers McMullen http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112585/ Swingers http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117802/ I'm sure there's a bunch more.

Is it true that the market does not like controversial films?

The controversy is that QT's movie was based off the entire plot of a Hong Kong Film and no credit was given. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HgbSAL8OKY Still a great movie though. ;)

plot Do you always write a plot before the screenplay?

I confess, I complete a Save the Cat Beat Sheet Outline before starting any script. That's just my way though ;)

POLL: How is this opening scene?

I really like this character description from "PULP"… "It is impossible to tell where the Young Woman is from or how old she is; everything she does contradicts something she did." That captures my imagination. QT has great style. ;)
