Great sound for less than $200, the definitive answer!

Hire a sound guy. Now for that you probably won't get a seasoned Hollywood pro but you will find someone who is starting out with enough good kit and knowledge to do a good job. You can probably get a guy with the rode NTG1 and the Tascam DR-100 you were thinking of buying for a pizza and cab...

    Cameras and sound equipment

Maybe you should just find yourself an audio guy? Places like Mandy.com are a good place to find new sound guys with some decent kit looking for projects to get involved with, often for just their expenses, to gain experience. At the very least you could nose around their kit and watch how they...

    Great Mic/Recorder Pair

Why is that alcove? What is it about shotties that increase the roominess? That kind of confuses me a bit. I would of thought a tighter pick up would pick up less room but a very unnatural room noise that may change with different angles. I know that this is fact and not disputing this just...

Best shotgun mic and recorder combo

I often pair an ME66 with a Tascam DR-100 and get fairly good results. The output of the ME-66 is just good enough for me to get decent levels without having to flick the gain switch to high which really brings up the hiss. I tend to be set to medium gain with record levels between 4 and 9...

    Syncing Audio

I remember going to an exhibition when pro level digital open reels where pretty new and seriously expensive and seeing right next to them an analogue tape simulator for nearly as much money. I remember chuckling to myself as I added up it must cost around £45k to end back up with the sound of...

    Syncing Audio

Used to work with tape but not film work. Used 2inch multitracks in recording studios. Do I not miss lining up and biasing 24 tracks of tape. Seem to remember them hitting speed pretty damn fast considering.

    Syncing Audio

Doesn't the T3i have manual audio levels without hacking? Always thought that was one of the key things about it. Whatever the answer if you've got money for a recorder, that's gonna be better. When I'm on set (taking sound) I have a clipboard and log my file numbers against scene, slate and...

    Canon T3i

Also, unlike cine lenses, DSLR lenses don't hold their focus when zooming. Forgot the term for enses that do but DSLR lenses will shift focus as you zoom. Luckily digital zoom makes up for the practise of zooming in to focus but there's no real solution (except for smaller apertures) for...

    Cameras and sound equipment

Worth noting that if you are a student you can get pluraleyes or dual eyes at really good pricing, from toolfarm if I recall correctly. Pluraleyes is strictly speaking the better option but dualeyes has it's charms, especially simplistic work flow. The main difference is pluraleyes works inside...

Rendering For Youtube Headache ! Help PLease

Looks like something I get with my 2Ti sometimes. As such maybe the issue is with your footage. Did you ever see the card buffer filling up? Even if recording didn't stop the camera could of dropped frames. Hard to spot on the LCD but try playing the original file off the camera with the HDMI...

    Video export too light

Is this particular to .mov files? Is it a quicktime thing? Off to double chck my vimeo files but to be honest they've normally looked OK

    Video export too light

I'm editing on a PC using AVID Media Composer. Source material id from a Canon 550D shooting 1080/25i. When exporting to SD .mov the output is much lighter when played in quicktime than it has been in my edit software. I tried RGB colourspace (which I believe is kinda wrong) that is better but...

    GH2 audio recording...

Unless that is the 'pro' version of that mic the reason you do not like the results with the Tascam are probably because the Rode isn't putting out enough signal for the Tascam (which likes really hot signals) and you are hearing the artefacts of cranking up the gain. Also, with the Rode video...

Sensors like 35mm needed or no?

One thing to bare in mind is cine cameras exposed VERTICAL frames so in reality frame size was not 35mm. Supposed to be closer in size to the APS-C sensors such as 7D and 550D and Nikon equivalents. Super shallow DOF isn't always an advantage btw, depending on what you're shooting.

    recorder pouch recomendation

I never came across those cases so I made a sling from mine. Took a length of aluminium flat bar, drilled a hole to mount the recorder and a couple of holes at the top for the strap to clip to. I used a couple of keyrings through the holes then the clips from the strap clip to the rings. Glued...

    Sound Devices difference

I went for the 744t as I believed the post guys would appreciate discreet channels instead of a mix done in less that perfect conditions (I tend to work on low budget shorts with a one man sound team) At the time I only owned one mic so it is all pretty redundant but would rather spend on a...

Best Shotgun mic to pair with DR-100

The ME-66 can be run off it's own batteries with the correct power module. I use that a lot with my DR-100 because phantom powered mics really do suck batteries down and the circuitry in my DR-100 is prtty weak and whistles a lot if I use phantom unless batteries are fresh.
