    Music Video Challenge

Thanks, statman. I wasn't really asking for access to the band, I was just commenting that it would be nice. I'm happy with a good, narrative song. I'm definitely going to check out the competition. Thanks for taking time to respond. Doug

    editing Trying some laser effects

The first laser texture reminds me of a shot from the rail gun in Quake. I was afraid of that.

    editing Trying some laser effects

That's a good start. I see you used 3 different textures for your beam. I like the last one best. I also noticed that you "flashed" the background plate. The question that comes to my mind is "does an energy weapon have a recoil?" I believe the common practice is to give plasma rifles and...

    Music Video Challenge

It would be cool if we had access to the band, but since I'm on the East coast, that may not be practical for me. I am kind of excited about having a good music track to use as the basis for a creative piece, though. It seems like the band/artist would like it more, if they were featured in...

    24p vs. cine-look through editing

I tried Cinema tools to convert 60i to 24p. The result was Ok, but there was still some comb (interlacing artifacts) after the conversion. I read the docs for Cinema tools and it would appear that they expect you to be removing telecine, not converting standard 60i to 24p. Of course, there is...

    Camera Question

Elderlandwurm, First, if you are in Eastern NC, you may want to come see me and we can do some real world testing. I'm just east of Jacksonville, NC. There are a couple of points I'd like to make regarding your comments, so far; 1) shooting in daylight doesn't necessarily get you off the...

Great job! I've been saving part of an old vacuum cleaner for just such a project. Your results are inspirational! Doug

    imac or macpro?

Do you think you're ever going to want an HD capture card, or any other special interface cards? If so, your only option is a MacPro. I am editing on an iMac 2.4Ghz Intel Core Duo 2 with 4GB of RAM and a 20" screen. It performs very well, for my purposes, and I am using the same camera you...

    24p vs. cine-look through editing

I did some tests with Magic Bullet and came to the same conclusion. I also didn't see any discernible advantage to using their SD to HD upscaling. It may work better with different subject matter. I may make this my next challenge, to create good 24p from 60i, using as much information is...

    the 5k equipment dilemma

We have some things in common Hakim (except that my specialty is DP). I try to know as much about every aspect of the production as I can, and of course I want to master every aspect of my camera and know how it will perform in various conditions. However, I have learned, after many sleepless...

Can anyone tell me what they think

I had an idea regarding the dilemma with the jet passing overhead. If you don't want to do another take after a jet rudely interrupts your dialog, stop talking and let the camera record the jet sounds until they fade away. Then, when you are editing, you can overlay the fading jet sounds on...

    24p vs. cine-look through editing

No, at the risk of speaking for Knightly, I believe he is referring to the fact that Canon's 30f mode on the XL series is not true progressive, and it results in reduced resolution. Even on the Canon XH-A1, there is a subtle loss in image sharpness using the frame modes.

Can anyone tell me what they think

One of these film maker gurus can probably explain this better than I, but the 180 degree rule says that you should not cross an imaginary line that represents the stage line. I can already see this explanation is going to suck ... If you imagine that you're looking at your actors from across a...

EZLeaves - Free software to design your laurels

This is one of my pet peeves, Will. The images are 800x443 at any dpi. They are about 11 x 6 inches @ 72 dpi, or 2 2/3 x 1 1/2 inches @ 300 dpi.

Can anyone tell me what they think

Ok, I watched it. The first problem I see is that your characters are often looking out of the frame. You need to get an off camera microphone to strengthen your dialog. The script was pretty funny, but a little hard to follow, at times. Watch your 180 degree rule when cutting. Ok, having...

    WiFi Wilmington Film Convention

Tony, I believe you are correct. I should have gotten my photo, but I think we were in shock. My subject didn't want to make a scene, and my indignation had been building for some time. I hate to say it, but my decision to turn heel and leave immediately was emotionally motivated. I'd like...

    WiFi Wilmington Film Convention

Thank you, for that polite response, Sheila. I do understand the circumstances were less than ideal. As someone who knows more about electrical engineering than most, I can say without reservation that what happened Friday night was avoidable. I would strongly suggest that next year you not...

sound Is there a best way to promote composing?

In this particular area, I'm nobody and I know nothing, so take this as a suggestion from the peanut gallery. I recently attended a presentation by the director of "One Tree Hill". He talked about how they ended each episode with a full length music track, and that he had licensed tracks from...
