I have a hard time writing short films.

I guess one of your problems is that you want to tell the viewer too much about your characters and their background. However, in a short film you don't have to give the viewer all the information about the characters. Let them figure stuff out. Give them little hints of whats your character is...

    Complete Novice - what first?

Well, generally internetaccess for a video editing pc is not needed. However, there're often times where you'll need to download an upgrade of your program or one of the latest codecs ect. While you could potentially download it all on that other desktop and then bring it to your laptop with a...

    Recording Timecode To Audio

I still don't see where your problem is. Why don't you start recording sound and video (meaning all the cameras and all your sound-channels) at about the same time and then clap loudly so that all the mics pick it up and your camera, too. Then you keep all your recorings running all the time...

    Complete Novice - what first?

There're several beginners-programs for around 100$. I'd say go for something like Adobe Premiere Elements. If you don't want to spend any money at all, you could try KDEnLive @ http://www.kdenlive.org/ or Viva @ http://vivia-video.org/ or LiVES @ http://lives.sourceforge.net/ Or just use the...

action How to write an action scene?

Oftentimes there will be a simple "this is the fight scene" in the actual script. Then a stunt choreagrapher is hired to choreograph the fight move by move. I know that for example the fights on matrix were choreographed by a chinese (i belive) stunt team. They filmed the moves they did...

Recording In HD for SD Distrobution

It all depends on the camera, because 1080p alone doesn't mean you'll get good quality. Something like the "PocketDV AHD Z600" does shoot Full HD but it's very small and I can't imagine the quality being as good as something shot on a HVX200. However, comparing the finals image on a DVD shot...

    Breaks for actors?

I don't think it's necessary to have a break every 20 minutes or so because there're a lot of breaks already, asindietalk already pointed out. What your actors do in those breaks is up to them, I think. I haven't been on too many shoots yet, but oftentimes the actors will try to focus on the...

    Laptops

Yeah, commercial use of the student version is not allowed here, too. However, there's a Version you can buy as a student that actually allows you to use it commercially and still cots way less that the normal version (I think it's about 700€, 1000$ or so - still only 1/3 of the normal price).

    Laptops

Well, I like Adobe Premiere Pro and the whole Adobe Production Premium suit a lot! As a student you can get if for around 500$ I think and you'll get everything you'll ever need for your film. Premiere Pro is one of the best editing Programs, After Effects is great for Motion Graphics and...

    Laptops

The new MacBooks don't even have Firewire which really sucks if you're doing video editing. But I think the expensive MacBook Pro still has a Firewire port. As for Dell, I think you can't go wrong with them. Great products and good costumer service. Do you already have any video editing...

    lighting Help With Lighting Properly

Well, 150W+60W is not very much. I mostly use at least 3x500W for a good 3-point lighting setup. That way the camera has enough light to work with and your images don't get grainy. I think I paid about 60$ for the three lights and they even came with a tripod for each of them.

Red Scarlet should get the drool flowing

As far as I know, the RED records the 3k as a r3d-file but also saves a 1080, 720 and SD version of the file on the disk. The fps 1-120 (150) means that you can record at frame rates as low as 1fps up to 120fps. The HD-Qichtime-file that's saved can only support 1-30 fps, I guess.

    Good film hosting sites

vimeo.com and vreel.net offer high quality. Blip.tv is also a good one, especially for pod(vidcasters releasing several episodes a week/month

    editing Editing software, etc.

That's right. Basically if you buy the student version, your are not allowed to make any money with the film. However I think there's a student version with a special license that allows you to use it comercially while still costing way less that the normal version.

    editing Exporting edited footage

Four publishing it to the web and making it available via download I'd choose the DivX Codec or h.264. If you want to embed it in your page, flash is the way to go. As for DVD, I don't know any software on the mac but I'm sure there's some good ones out there. I even think the iLife-siut has a...
