    Hickory Never Bleeds

Thanks, man! I'm aiming for a June/July completion, but hoping the rough editing as I go allows me to pull it off before then. Much of the work is in the effects shots and foley. There's also the soundtrack that I've got to record. I appreciate the comments and encouragement!

Grain 35: Affordable Film Grain for your Digital Footage

Grain overlays are really catching on. I just purchased a set from GorillaGrain, and considering getting some from RGrain (not actual film scans, but very convincing). Contacted CineGrain in regards to buying JUST their 35mm scans as a package (their cheapest is $299, which includes a lot of...

    Hickory Never Bleeds

HA HA! She's fantastic, no doubt. Not only in helping run camera and/or sound, but in steadfast moral support... 'cuz I'm rather easily discouraged. I'll tell her an IndieTalk pro suggested a raise is in order. She'll get a kick out of it! :) I like that idea, though the ramen noodle...

    Hickory Never Bleeds

Ha ha! Thanks, Flicker! He's actually eating ramen noodles (which he removes from an ammo box). He gives this spiel early on in the film about only using half the sodium packet, etc. ("You've got to go sometime, but I'll be danged if it's from sodium consumption.") Played for humor but to...

    Hickory Never Bleeds

Thanks a lot, Rayw! The feedback helps! There may not be much I can do in terms of framing at this point, but some isolated color grading may help some of the darkness issues. The film will involve lots of talking like this, but I've grabbed much b-roll/inserts to cut to because I totally...

    Hickory Never Bleeds

This is the character I play in the film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bKsUvbdgUQ I'd appreciate any feedback in terms of technical aspects (sound, grading, etc.) as well as on the performance. Thanks!

    Hickory Never Bleeds

Here's a short scene from the film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKABQu-vlFM Shot using two cameras: One handheld and one on tripod near the target. Rifle audio captured on-site. I may add a little foley to the final version. (ie. target hits and a bit of rifle handling noise)

cinematography How do you frame shots for 2.35:1 aspect ratio on a 7D?

One idea: With your 7D on a tripod, point it at a 16:9 monitor that is displaying a 2.35:1 letterbox at full screen. Zoom in until what you see in your 7D's LCD screen matches the monitor. Use that as a guide to place the tape. Not as exact as having the ML in-camera guides, but should get...

    Digital Bolex - 2K Raw at $2500

That Digital Bolex looks "Cadillac", as we say in south MS. I really like what they've got going so far! IndieBudget: I remember the Elphel project from a few years back. Had no idea those guys were still going with that. If I'm not mistaken, it was going on (or may have started around) the...

    Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8?

Jeff, thanks so much for taking the time to shoot and upload this! Judging from your footage, it seems like it would work. Particularly if I'll be establishing focus on the ending shot (ie. when zoomed) and using mostly quick zooms. Oh, and the YouTube embed works by pasting just the video...

    Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8?

Anyone by chance have experience with the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8? (Didn't want to start a new thread.) I own a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and really like it... though I've had no experience with their zooms.

    Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8?

Hey Jeff! Thanks so much, man! But don't go through a lot of trouble on my account. I have at least one lens (Tokina 11-16 f/2.8) that is parfocal, but it's definitely a lower zoom range / wide-shots-only kind of lens. P.S. I did a little legwork on my own in regards to whether the Canon...

    Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8?

Sure! I just did a Vimeo search for "Tamron 17-50 Canon 7D": http://vimeo.com/search/videos/search:tamron%2017-50%20canon%207D/st/24f27c31 Note: Check the video description, as some of them used other lenses along with the Tamron 17-50.

    Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8?

Hi Jeff! I appreciate the feedback on that Canon. Do you happen to know if it's parfocal?

    Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8?

I've read really positive stuff about Rokinon/Samyang. (Not to mention I completely favor manual aperture rings over automatic or camera-set aperture.) Been tempted by their 35mm f/1.4. As you mention, though... no zooms. :( And a constant-aperture zoom is something I'm after for doc work.

    Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8?

I'm looking to add a zoom lens to my Canon 7D kit. My sights have been set on the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 for a while, but considering I mostly do this whole video thing for fun... I can't really justify quite that much for a lens. AND there's the hesitation about paying that much for a...
